Overview

Who would have bet on Yamaha to invade Harley-Davidson’s territory with such a bold chopper? In 2016, the XVS 1300 Custom Stryker is not a revolution, but it crystallizes an assumed strategy: to offer a cruiser with extreme looks without the prohibitive price of American competition. For around €11,000, it puts on the road a style that packs a punch, robust mechanics, and a very "low and slow" philosophy. This year, the novelty is limited to a Matt Grey color scheme and a numbered scratch on the tank, a nod to the US versions. But the essential remains this name, Stryker, imported directly from America because it better conveys the identity of the machine than the simple XVS 1300 Custom. It smells of asphalt, audacity, and the assumed virility of an engine that doesn’t go unnoticed.

Yamaha XVS 1300 Custom Stryker

The mechanical base is a familiar face, the 60° V-twin of 1304 cm3 that has proven its worth on the Midnight Star. With its 72 horsepower at 5500 rpm and, above all, its torque of 103 Nm available from 3000 rpm, it doesn't seek pure performance. The mapping is even slightly different here, favoring a lower response in the rev range. We are far from the power excess of a modern muscle bike, but that's the whole point. This engine forges its character in constant thrust, in a deep and regular rumble that befits the chopper style. Compared to a Harley-Davidson Breakout, the price of a Yamaha XVS 1300 Custom Stryker 2015 or 2016 is a massive argument: you get radical aesthetics for almost half the price. The compromise lies in the refinement of the finishes and perhaps in the prestige of the brand, but for the rider who wants a presence without breaking the bank, the calculation is quickly done.

The geometry is simply spectacular. A rake angle of 34°, a wheelbase of 1755 mm, a 21-inch front wheel and a 210 mm wide rear tire clearly announce the color: handling will not be sporty. It's a boat, a pure chopper that requires anticipation in corners. Yamaha promises good maneuverability at low speed, an asset for urban parades, but as soon as the pace accelerates, you have to deal with this 293 kg mass and this very multiplied steering. The braking, with its two modest discs, is sufficient but not crazy, in the image of the overall philosophy. This machine is made to ride calmly, to savor the straight lines and to turn heads. It is not the choice of the track rider or the hurried touring rider.

Ultimately, the Yamaha XVS 1300 Custom Stryker finds its audience among lovers of raw style, those who prioritize visual impact and the sensation of brute power rather than quantified performance. It is a credible and less expensive alternative to American choppers, with the advantage of Japanese reliability and a sober but efficient engine. Its major drawback is its specialization: it excels in its role as a showpiece, but becomes limiting as soon as you want to move away from the pure custom role. For those who accept this condition, it offers a coherent package, an extreme look and a price that, even today for a used model like a 2015, remains a strong argument in the world of large twins.
