Overview
As the custom offering has shrunk within the Japanese conglomerate. The days of large twins overflowing with cm3 are over, at least in Europe. Only mid-displacement engines are still allowed to weave between the imposing American machines.
The playing field is thus still active, almost playful. With its 950 Bolt... pardon, XV 950, Yamaha has acquired the little troublemaker that was missing from the Japanese custom scene. Stripped down, prioritizing a raw look, inspired by dry pleasure, this bobber aims for the essentials, and the market of the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883.
The standard version is no longer on offer, and it is the R version, adapted to Euro4 standards, that is responsible for defending Yam's stronghold in the sector. Far from bringing a Racing touch, it mainly offers a few additional pieces of equipment. The Bolt R is thus equipped with separate reservoir shock absorbers, significantly improving comfort, an imitation "suede" seat, a colored band on the tank, and ABS as standard.
It's hard to believe that this machine is related to the 950 Midnight Star. It still shares the same 942 cm3 twin, however retouched for a more urban character. A little less powerful, it delivers its 52 horsepower a little earlier than on the cruiser, and its maximum torque is a little more robust. However, the experience is enjoyed differently. The sensations and vibrations aspect is highlighted on the Bolt. The engine, devoid of a balance shaft, is mounted rigidly in this new steel double cradle frame. Enough to distribute a few vibrations judiciously. From there to consider American-style pulses... There is still a step to take, the quest for perfection of Japanese machines having a solid reputation for erasing the flaws of a mechanical system. Let's not complain, it promises anyway a lively and rebellious machine, perfectly suited to be further unhinged with personalization exercises.
