Overview
For the XSR 700 Legacy, Yamaha has added a bit more nostalgia to its neo-retro Faster-Sons range. Lacking a true scrambler in its lineup, the manufacturer derives the XSR towards a more rural identity. A story of heritage where accessories are more prominent than the brawls.
This XSR smells a bit like foam pushing on stones, the dust of an old book, and a plaid shirt. The Legacy has no technical differences in terms of chassis or mechanics compared to the standard 700; Yamaha simply dresses it with a grayish color scheme, bronze-gold rims, and the iconic “Speedblock” motif to distinguish it.
A feeling reinforced by the presence of fork gaiters, a handlebar with a reinforcing bar, a grille on the headlight, adventure-style grips, reinforced footpegs, a flat saddle (but slightly curved nonetheless), and Pirelli MT 60 RS block pattern tires.
It’s akin to a factory-style preparation. Far from Yard Built concepts; closer to a trendy cosmetic. Ultimately, this Legacy follows the X-Tribute, with the same accessories – only the headlight protector and color scheme allow for a difference.
A good dose of frivolity on a machine that only asks for a good helping of fun. The 73 horsepower twin is one of the most lively in the current production. A more relaxed riding position than on the MT-07 will inspire less desire to attack but more to enjoy. Its wide handlebar will facilitate cornering engagements and its dynamic behavior promises to be as healthy as the others XSR. Except on the suspension side, which bottoms out when the rider puts in a lot of pace.
The XSR Legacy also exists in a mini format, with the engine from the MT-125. It’s a shame that the 700, contrary to its little sister, did not opt for spoked rims. The charm would have been more striking.
