Overview
Does an entry-level motorcycle have to be boring? Yamaha clearly said no with the XJ6 600 Diversion F of 2012. As heir to the very academic XJ 600, one might have expected a simple training cube, quickly resold to move on to something more sporty. But the engineers at Iwata raised the bar, and the result is a far more charismatic proposition than it appears.

The heart of the machine is this 600 cc inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 76 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. It’s not a powerhouse, but that’s precisely where its genius lies. The curve is progressive, the torque of 59.8 Nm arrives smoothly, and this Yamaha xj6 600 diversion f offers remarkable accessibility for a novice. The six-speed gearbox is precise, and the engine, inherited from the sporty world, has a soul that sings when you rev it up, far from the torquey but less exciting twin-cylinder of the competing Kawasaki ER-6f.
The chassis is also pleasantly surprising. The steel frame, 41 mm fork, and single shock offer neutral and reassuring handling. With a wet weight of 217 kg and a seat height of 78.5 cm, the motorcycle is easy to handle. It devours daily use with total ease, whether in the city or on national roads. The braking, with its two front discs, is effective without being brutal, perfect for getting a feel for it. It’s a machine that inspires confidence from the first few meters.
The real plus of this F version, for Fairing, lies in its full fairing. Not only does it give the Yamaha xj6 600 diversion f a sportier and more refined look than the naked version, but it also offers tangible protection from the weather and wind. At 7199 euros new, it positioned itself as a serious and more sophisticated alternative to many simple roadsters. It is aimed at the rider looking for a first large displacement, versatile motorcycle, capable of serious rides without frustration, or at someone wanting a reliable and enjoyable machine for everyday use.
Ultimately, the XJ6 Diversion F is much more than a learning tool. It’s an honest, well-finished motorcycle, with an engaging engine and effective protection. It doesn’t seek to compete with pure sportbikes, but it offers an intelligent balance between ease, pleasure, and versatility. A reasonable, but never restrictive, choice that has marked its time.
