Overview
How do you manage to sell a motorcycle that, technically, doesn't really exist? Yamaha found the answer with the XJ6 Diversion F of 2013. Under this name that evokes a classic touring bike, the Japanese firm has hidden a secret well known to initiates: the heart of this machine is that of the old R6, deactivated for the general public. A 600 cc inline four-cylinder engine, but limited to 76 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 59.8 Nm of torque. The result is an engine of exemplary docility at low revs, ideal for a novice, but which knows how to regain real liveliness when it is called upon. You shouldn't look for the fury of a pure sportbike, but rather a progressiveness and reliability that make this engine a companion on the road without surprises.

The chassis is in the image of the engine: efficient without being punitive. The steel frame, the 41 mm fork and the mono-shock offer stable and precise handling, capable of absorbing without drama our sometimes chaotic road network. With 217 kg fully fueled, it is not a featherweight, but its weight remains well controlled. The seat height of 785 mm is a major asset for conviviality, allowing most riders to feel confident from the first grip. It is here that the Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F finds its true strength: it is a hassle-free machine, which requires no particular gymnastics to be appreciated.
The aesthetics of this F version, with its full fairing, is an interesting subject. Yamaha tried to give it a more dynamic look with lateral air ducts, but it remains in a gray area between the anonymous touring bike and the stylized sportbike. Faced with a Kawasaki ER-6f, more alluring and design-oriented, the Diversion F often appears more conservative. Its improvements for 2013, such as the reworked passenger handles, the LED dashboard or the anti-slip coating on the seat, are practical touches that aim for daily use, not aesthetic thrills. Its 17-liter fuel tank and announced top speed of 200 km/h position it as a motorcycle for mixed journeys, neither too urban nor too adventurous.
Ultimately, this Yamaha XJ6 600 Diversion F is a very rational proposition. At 7499 euros, it sits in the same range as its competitors like the ER-6f, but with a different philosophy. It doesn't seek to excite, but to reassure and to serve. Its audience is clear: the novice motorcyclist or the one who is looking for a versatile mount, easy to live with and capable of a few bursts of pleasure without ever becoming intimidating. It is the anti-fantasy, the motorcycle that proves that the pleasure of riding can also come from simplicity and reliability, without the need for excessive power or a flashy design. For those looking for a discreet but capable road companion, it remains a serious option to consider.
