Overview
Are you looking for a machine capable of following you on the most winding trails, carrying you tirelessly for hours, and forgiving you a few riding mistakes? The Yamaha WR250F might be your mount. It’s not the most powerful, but that moderation is precisely its strength in the enduro world. With its 34 horsepower drawn from a liquid-cooled four-stroke engine, it doesn’t have the brutality of a two-stroke, but it delivers linear power and a well-defined torque, ideal for beginners or seasoned riders who seek regularity rather than explosive bursts.

The heart of this WR250F is directly inspired by the YZ250F motocross bike, a guarantee of seriousness. The reverse cylinder head, optimized intake ports, and specific camshaft work together to offer a very wide usable rev range. You can feel that Yamaha sought efficiency rather than a raw power figure. Electric starting is a blessing after a fall or on a technical climb, and the 8-liter fuel tank allows you to manage a half-day without stress. But the real luxury, for a machine of this price – nearly 9400 euros – is the Power Tuner application. Connecting your smartphone to adjust the mapping according to the terrain or fatigue is a rare level of sophistication on a 250 enduro.
The chassis is another strong point. This Deltabox aluminum frame, derived from CF casting techniques, has been reworked for 2023. It offers a well-calculated rigidity, which gives a feeling of precision and connection with the ground. Combined with the fully adjustable KYB suspensions, it transforms this WR250F into a very versatile tool. It can be adapted to a rocky trail or a faster course without difficulty. Compared to a KTM 250 EXC-F, it is perhaps less explosive, but it gains in smoothness and ease of approach. Its wet weight of 115 kg is well within the standard for the category, and the seat height of 955 mm remains accessible for a rider of average height.
The improvements are not cosmetic. The front brake, directly imported from the YZ, with its 270 mm disc and stiffer caliper, offers remarkable power and control. The multifunction meter, with its standard and race modes, is a valuable tool for long raids. And details like the improved chain tensioner or the reinforced muffler bracket show attention to the rider's daily use. It is a machine designed to be used intensively, not just for Sunday outings.
Who is it for? For the trail rider who wants to try enduro without being intimidated, for the regular rider looking for a reliable and adaptable motorcycle, and even for the amateur competitor in the 250 category. It’s not the most radical, but it is probably one of the most balanced and easiest to live with on the market. Previous versions, such as the Yamaha WR250F 2017 or 2021, had already laid solid foundations, but this 2023 evolution further refines the whole. If you are considering a used Yamaha WR250F, be sure to check the evolutions, as the improvements to the frame and braking since 2022 are significant. Essentially, it is an enduro that does honor to its blue pedigree, without ever demanding a professional rider’s skill level. It is a robust and intelligent companion for dirt roads.
