Overview
Imagine a machine that has swallowed the 2000s and digested legends like the Yamaha WR250F 2004 to emerge honed, ready for the most hostile trails. The 2022 version, and its 2023 derivative, do not do things by halves. Yamaha has freely drawn from the YZ250F motocross pool to give this enduro, now thirsty for performance, a serious boost. For around €8600, you buy more than a simple 250cc twin cylinder; you are offering yourself a barely civilized racing concentrate.

The heart of the beast is this four-stroke single-cylinder engine that delivers 34 horsepower. Raw figures don't tell the whole story. The magic happens with the adoption of the YZ cylinder head, completely redesigning the engine's breathing. The torque, already broad on previous Yamaha WR250F 2018 or 2019 models, gains bite in the low end and explodes in liveliness as the tachometer rises. This is where the Power Tuner application, coupled with a handlebar switch, becomes an engineer's toy. You can refine the character in two clicks, soften it for mud or excite it for rocky terrain. A real plus that fully justifies a Yamaha WR250F test ride.
The chassis follows the same logic of technology transfer. The aluminum Deltabox frame benefits from the most advanced casting techniques to offer controlled rigidity, completely redesigned to match the new engine's outbursts. Paired with this revised skeleton, the KYB suspensions, already excellent on the Yamaha WR250F 2021, receive new settings. The speed-sensitive fork and rear shock form a surgically precise assembly, capable of absorbing major impacts without losing traction. When stationary, with its 115 kg fully fueled and a seat at 95.5 cm, it intimidates a little, but once in motion, this lightness and centralization of masses work miracles.
In terms of braking, Yamaha has once again struck at the cross cousin. The stiffer front caliper and the 270 mm disc offer a much higher braking power than previous generations, such as the Yamaha WR250F 2017. It is clean, progressive and inspires incredible confidence when the track narrows. The small multifunctional instrument panel reminds you that this machine is also designed for road sections or long outings, even if the 8-liter tank requires strategic stops. It is clearly a motorcycle for the demanding rider, one who seeks a precision weapon for off-road more than a simple touring trail.
So, who is the rider of the WR250F 2022? Certainly not a complete beginner, despite its welcome electric starter. It is the ideal mount for the boulder traveler, the assiduous enduro practitioner who wants a reliable, ultra-evolving machine directly from competition. It requires committed riding to reveal its full potential. Faced with competitors such as the KTM 250 EXC-F or the Beta RR 250, it plays the card of finesse and electronic versatility. Finding a used Yamaha WR250F from this generation becomes a good deal, because the evolutions on the 2023, 2024 or even the future 2025 Yamaha WR250F models are often refinements. For those who dream of limitless trails, with or without a road homologation kit, this Yamaha remains an absolute reference.
