Overview
How many motorcycles can boast being born as a concept bike and surviving almost intact all the way to the production line? The Yamaha MT-01 belongs to that very exclusive club. First appearing as a prototype in 1999, it eventually hit our roads looking nearly identical to the show bike. And that's the whole point of this machine: it looks like nothing else. Its 1670 cc V-twin, borrowed from the Road Star Warrior, sits enthroned at the center of a cast aluminum double-cradle frame, like an engine block on display in an art gallery. Except this one pulses, vibrates, and rumbles. Air-cooled, fuel-injected, fitted with four valves per cylinder and the EXUP system, this long-stroke twin (97 x 113 mm) delivers 90 hp at 4,750 rpm. On paper, it's modest. In your gut, it's a different story.

Because the Yamaha MT-01's spec sheet only tells part of the truth. The 150.3 Nm of torque available from just 3,750 rpm turns every twist of the throttle into a controlled earthquake. The redline sits at 5,500 rpm. In other words, this engine lives in a very narrow band, but it lives there intensely. We're a long way from the classic Japanese roadsters like the Z 1000 or Italian sportbikes like the Ducati Monster S4R, which bank on high revs and horsepower. The MT-01 plays in a different register: raw torque, immediate thrust, pure mechanical character. A philosophy reminiscent of American Buells, transposed with an Iwata twist.
On the chassis side, Yamaha didn't cut any corners. The telescopic fork and linkage-type swingarm are directly inspired by the R1, and the six-piston radial braking system borrowed from the in-house supersport is a serious asset on a machine weighing 265 kg wet. The short 1,525 mm wheelbase and 120/70 and 190/50 tires on 17-inch rims confirm the chassis's sporty intent. The MT-01 wants to carve corners, not just ride in a straight line. But make no mistake: with a seat height perched at 825 mm and a tank holding just 15 liters, it demands compromises. Range remains limited and long-distance comfort is clearly not its priority.
Then there's the question of positioning. At €13,263, the Yamaha MT-01 sits in a niche that nobody else truly occupies. Too unconventional for fans of standard roadsters, too sporty in its chassis to win over custom enthusiasts, not powerful enough on paper to rival the Triumph Rocket III or Kawasaki VN 2000 on the market. And that's precisely what makes it so appealing. This bike is aimed at riders who've had enough of neatly defined categories, at those who want a living engine beneath them rather than a spec sheet full of numbers. On the used Yamaha MT-01 market, well-maintained examples still hold a respectable value, proof that enthusiasts know how to recognize something truly special. If you're looking for a motorcycle that resembles nothing else and you're willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort for character, the MT-01 is worth a serious look. It doesn't chase numbers. It chases your senses.
