Overview

Who still remembers a time when Yamaha dared to graft a 1670 cc V-twin, borrowed from the cruiser world, into an aluminum frame worthy of a pure sportbike? The Yamaha MT-01 remains to this day one of the boldest gambles from the Iwata manufacturer. A muscle bike roadster that looks like nothing else, neither then nor now. And this 2009 version, the SP edition, pushes things one notch further with Öhlins suspension — inverted fork and rear shock — that transform the beast into an object of desire for lovers of fine engineering.

Yamaha MT-01

On the Yamaha MT-01 spec sheet, the numbers tell a unique story. The V-twin produces 90 horsepower at 4750 rpm, which looks modest on paper. But it's the torque that makes all the difference: 150 Nm available from just 3750 rpm. By comparison, a Ducati Diavel from the same era may boast more power, but it doesn't deliver that raw, almost diesel-like pulling sensation from the very lowest revs. The engine revs short, with a redline set below 6000 rpm, and the 97 mm bore combined with a 113 mm stroke confirms the long-stroke character of this twin. Every twist of the throttle is felt in your gut, not in the rev counter.

The die-cast aluminum twin-spar frame, a 1525 mm wheelbase, and 120/70 and 190/50 tires on 17-inch rims give this machine a surprisingly sporty handling for its 265 kg wet weight. The SP version adds six-piston radial-mount calipers, Pirelli Diablo Rosso tires, and a 28.6 mm handlebar mounted on billet-machined risers. The braking, with dual discs up front and a single at the rear, proves well matched to the machine's temperament. On the other hand, the 15-liter tank limits range and reveals a vocation for spirited rides rather than grand touring. The five-speed gearbox does the job without distinction — a sixth gear wouldn't have been unwelcome to comfortably exploit the 208 km/h top speed.

In terms of style, the MT-01 SP plays in a league of its own. The two-tone white and red tank, gold wheels, red and black seat, and chrome accents give it a visual presence that more conventional Japanese streetfighters have never managed to match. This motorcycle is aimed at a very specific audience: the experienced rider who has already spent time on sportbikes or classic roadsters and is looking for something different. Not a beginner — the 825 mm seat height and considerable weight demand confidence. Not a dedicated track rider — the engine lacks neither the top-end reach nor the horsepower for that role. Rather, a connoisseur of raw mechanical sensations, someone attuned to the character of an engine that vibrates and pulls like few others can.

Priced at 16,990 euros in 2009, the Yamaha MT-01 SP sat in an uncomfortable zone against more versatile competitors. Today, it's on the used market that this machine truly comes into its own. It can be found in classified ads at prices that have become reasonable, and its mechanical reliability, inherited from the XV1700 Warrior powertrain, reassures buyers. Yamaha MT-01 accessories remain available, making customization straightforward. This is a motorcycle of character, built for those who refuse to ride like everyone else. An anomaly in the Yamaha catalog — and that is precisely what makes it so charming.
