Overview

What drives a manufacturer as methodical as Yamaha to unleash a concept bike onto the tarmac virtually unchanged from the show prototype? The Yamaha MT-01 was born from that rare boldness, first appearing as a prototype in 1999 before landing in dealerships with a striking faithfulness to the original dream. In 2010, this version retains everything that makes the beast so compelling and adds braking borrowed from the R1: radial-mount, six-piston calipers, two 310 mm discs up front. Supersport-grade equipment grafted onto a machine that is decidedly not one.

Yamaha MT-01

The heart of the Yamaha MT-01 is its 1670 cc V-twin inherited from the Road Star Warrior. An air-cooled, dry-sump engine with long-stroke dimensions (97 x 113 mm) that betray its purpose: to produce torque, loads of torque, and deliver it early. The 150 Nm available from just 3,750 rpm tell the story of this motorcycle better than its 90 hp at 4,750 rpm. The redline peaks at 5,500 rpm. This is a far cry from the rev-hungry Japanese screamers. Here, every twist of the throttle hits you in the gut, with a blunt and immediate surge more reminiscent of a Buell XB12 or a Ducati Monster S4R than a conventional Japanese roadster. The five-speed gearbox is more than adequate given the engine's character; you ride the torque rather than chasing revs, and the 210 km/h top speed confirms the MT-01 isn't playing in the dragster league.

On the scales, the 265 kg wet weight doesn't lie. This machine is massive. The die-cast aluminum frame, 43 mm inverted fork, and rear monoshock do their best to contain that mass with reasonable success, but don't expect the agility of a Z1000 or a Tuono. The Yamaha MT-01 is ridden with anticipation, playing on weight transfers and torque-driven drive out of corners. The 120/70-17 and 190/50-17 tires offer a good compromise, and the R1-inspired radial braking setup inspires confidence under hard deceleration. The 825 mm seat height remains accessible for most riders.

Then there's the question of positioning. The Yamaha MT-01's spec sheet doesn't fit any box. Too sporty for a cruiser, too unconventional for a standard roadster, not powerful enough to rival a Triumph Rocket III on pure muscle grounds. That's precisely what makes it endearing. It carved out its own segment — the high-torque naturally aspirated roadster — where mechanical sensations take priority over numbers. For anyone looking for a used Yamaha MT-01, it has become a solid bet: residual values hold steady, well-maintained examples are still available on the market, and Yamaha MT-01 accessories allow you to customize it to your taste.

The price of 13,263 euros new placed the MT-01 in a steep bracket for a 90 hp machine, and that's arguably its main shortcoming. At that price point, the competition offered more versatile or more powerful motorcycles on paper. But none of them delivered that singular sensation of sitting atop a Japanese Kodo drum, where every V-twin combustion pulse reverberates through the chassis and into your forearms. The MT-01 is aimed at riders who've already tried everything and want something other than a horsepower race. A motorcycle of character, imperfect in the details, but deeply honest in what it offers. Its one real oversight: long-distance comfort, sacrificed at the altar of style and compactness. With its 15-liter tank, you'd better not plan on crossing the country in one go.
