Overview
Who remembers a time when Japanese manufacturers dared to make the wildest bets? The 2011 Yamaha MT-01 SP embodies precisely that kind of audacity, now increasingly rare. Take a die-cast aluminum frame built for the track, graft on a 48° V-twin displacing 1670 cc borrowed from the cruiser world, and you get a machine unlike anything else in any catalog. A muscular roadster, almost anachronistic, that refuses to play by the segment's rules.

The heart of this Yamaha MT-01 SP beats to a very distinctive rhythm. With 90 horsepower delivered at just 4750 rpm and, more importantly, 150 Nm of torque available from as low as 3750 rpm, this long-stroke twin (97 x 113 mm) favors raw thrust over chasing redline. Forget the frantic rev-happy nature of Japanese four-cylinders. Here, every twist of the throttle translates into frank, visceral acceleration that pins you to the seat without ever needing to flirt with the rev limiter. The five-speed gearbox is more than sufficient to exploit this noble diesel-like character, and the 208 km/h top speed confirms that the MT-01 was never built to chase lap times. It would rather impress through sheer presence.
This SP version raises the bar a notch on the chassis side. Öhlins supplies both the 43 mm inverted fork and the rear mono-shock — nothing less. The braking follows the same pursuit of excellence, with six-piston radial calipers biting two 320 mm discs up front. We're talking sportbike-grade hardware, bolted onto a machine weighing 262 kg wet. The contrast is striking, almost provocative. Add Pirelli Diablo Rosso tires in 120/70 and 190/50 mounted on gold wheels, an oversized 28.6 mm handlebar fixed to billet-machined risers, and the two-tone white-and-red livery accented with chrome touches. The MT-01 SP doesn't just ride — it parades.
At €14,999 when new, the price tag was steep for a roadster with no modern electronics or rider aids. Up against the overpowered streetfighters of the era — Ducati Streetfighter, Aprilia Tuono — Yamaha's proposition seemed like an oddball. Less powerful, heavier, devoid of the sporty frenzy of its rivals. But that's precisely where its charm lies. The Yamaha MT-01 SP is aimed at those seeking a different sensory experience — riding on torque rather than horsepower, a mechanical heart that vibrates and pulses beneath the tank. Today, finding a used Yamaha MT-01 SP is almost a treasure hunt. Well-maintained examples are scarce, and collectors are starting to take serious notice.
Atypical yesterday, collectible tomorrow. The MT-01 SP remains one of the most singular machines ever to roll out of Iwata. A motorcycle that divides, intrigues, and leaves no one indifferent. For the rider tired of predictable formulas, it may just be the finest alternative of all.
