Overview

It’s heavy, it’s beastly, it’s over-the-top with this 1390 upgrade of the Super Duke R. KTM has boosted the engine to make it spit out even more horsepower. 190 horsepower in a hyper-roadster with a twin-cylinder engine – it’s simply insane. Especially since this motorcycle boasts an even more wild-looking face than previous generations.

As with the ex-1290, the Super Duke is available in EVO version. Three letters usually reserved for upgrades of existing machines but not for Katoche, who uses them to specify the installation of semi-active suspension. WP provides a complete 3rd generation package, recognizable by the small blue rings above the seals.

The large 48 mm SAT APEX inverted fork and its mono-shock of the same technology are reinforced with electronically controlled magnetic valves. Informed via a whole series of sensors and parameters, the SCU control unit adapts the damping level in real time according to the road profile and riding style. Five Modes determine how the suspension will react: Auto / Comfort / Rain / Street / Sport.

This 3rd generation presents itself as more precise, more responsive but also more consistent. Technological evolution has allowed for a saving of 750 grams on the fork. Adjustments can be fine-tuned from the dashboard, namely compression and rebound for the front and rear. With a double set for the shock absorber, allowing control of slow and fast compressions.

Thanks to electronics, Katoche wanted to go further in driving aids. By choosing the optional Suspension Pro pack, the rider will have access to two additional modes, Track and Pro. The key is three automatic preload adjustments (to react according to the load) and the Anti-Dive mode, a system that maintains the motorcycle's attitude during heavy braking. Moreover, the Superduke R EVO still has a “Factory Start” system like MotoGP: the rear of the motorcycle is lowered by pushing the rear preload to optimize traction and spectacular takeoffs.

The EVO brings the layer of electronics capable of satisfying an increased demand for feel and efficiency in riding. The 1390 phase boosts the beast not only 10 horsepower more but also a reworked intake, a larger tank (17.5 liters), winglets on the edges of the radiator, automatic purge brake and clutch master cylinders, a revamped dashboard, Michelin Power GP tires, a slightly revised frame, and retouched 5th and 6th gear ratios.

A whole host of elements have jumped from the 1290 to the 1390 to the delight of future users (tame ?). The monobrach, Stylema brake calipers, the three Riding Modes (+ 2 optional), traction and wheelie controls (with amplitude precision optional) and the savagery of the concept. The price and weight are up. We expected one but not the other; the Superduke R EVO reaches 201 kg. That said, when you have 190 horsepower and 14.8 mkg in the boiler, it's not the weight but the asphalt that will shred.
