Overview
What if the true adventure only began when the tarmac ends? That’s the philosophy that Triumph seems to have adopted with this 2018 Tiger 800 XCX, a machine that doesn’t just look nostalgically at dirt roads, it dives in. Beneath its serious trail appearance, it hides the soul of an adventurer, ready to leave road comfort for more unusual horizons. Faced with a Honda Africa Twin that focuses on torque and simplicity, the British bike plays the card of versatility and sophisticated electronics, a bold gamble for this segment.

Its heart beats to the rhythm of a 799 cm3 three-cylinder engine, a mechanical unit that delivers 95 horsepower at 9300 rpm. The figures are respectable, but it’s its character that is captivating. Triumph reworked its intake and exhaust to gain responsiveness at low speeds, and the shortened first gear clearly announces the color: we are here to pull, even on uneven terrain. With a 19-liter tank and a consumption announced at around 5.7 L/100 km, range is available for long getaways. The dry weight of 205 kg doesn’t make it the lightest, but its tubular frame and 43 mm fully adjustable WP inverted fork inspire confidence from the first few meters on gravel.
Where this 2018 Tiger 800 XCX truly marks its territory is through its equipment. The dashboard is dominated by a 5-inch color TFT screen, modern and configurable, controllable via a joystick on the handlebars. Electronics reign supreme, with five riding modes, including an Off-Road Pro mode that deactivates the rear ABS and softens traction control for the most experienced riders. Brembo brakes, switchable ABS, standard cruise control, and heated grips complete a very generous package. For around 13,500 euros new at the time, it positioned itself as a premium option against often more spartan competition.

But does this arsenal come at a price? Some pure road riders might reproach it for a certain complexity, where an Africa Twin focuses on robustness without frills. The seat height of 840 mm can also be intimidating, even though the triple’s low center of gravity facilitates maneuvers. It’s a machine for those who want it all: capable of devouring the highway on weekends, then tackling a forest path on Sunday morning without compromising on comfort or safety. It will appeal to the tech-savvy adventurer more than the purist of bushwhacking.

Today, searching for a used Triumph Tiger 800 XCX, especially a 2015 to 2019 model, can be an excellent calculation. These versions have proven their reliability and offer an unbeatable equipment/price ratio. Whether for a road test or to consult opinions on dedicated forums, the observation is often the same: it is one of the most accomplished and versatile mid-size trails of its generation. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre, but it embraces its contours with a mastery and equipment that still command respect.
