Overview
Who said that a maxi-trail had to necessarily roar with two inline or V cylinders? By launching its Tiger 1200 Explorer, Triumph took a contrary approach with a recipe that is dear to it: the essential three-cylinder engine. This is far from the first Tiger 900 of the 90s; this large touring machine of 2017 fully assumes its status as a road-eating machine, even if its name evokes more distant horizons.

Visually, the Explorer does not seek easy seduction. It is an imposing beast, with a well-tempered character, which displays its 244 kilograms dry weight without complex. The aesthetic touches are subtle – rims, exhaust, mirrors – except for the dashboard, which finally breaks with the usual Triumph platform to adopt a more martial and modern digital look. A welcome evolution.
The heart of the beast is, of course, this 1215 cm3 triplex engine, a rarity in the world of large trail bikes. With 139 horsepower and a torque of 122.6 Nm available fairly early in the rev range, it delivers a linear and sonorous fury that clearly distinguishes the English bike from its German or Japanese competitors. Shaft drive in a single-sided swingarm brings a touch of mechanical refinement, ideal for long journeys.
But where this generation marks a real progress is in its electronic approach. The base XR version offered at €15,400 serves a little as bait, with its two riding modes (Road and Rain) and basic ABS. To enjoy the true arsenal – semi-active suspensions, cruise control, lean-sensitive ABS, multiple aids – you must turn to the XRx or XRt finishes. A classic commercial strategy, but which can be frustrating, knowing that the weight and size just demand all these driving aids.
Ultimately, this Tiger 1200 Explorer XR is aimed at the demanding globetrotter looking for an alternative to the dominant twin-cylinder. Its three-cylinder engine is a real success, its chassis is balanced, but you need the budget to access the well-equipped versions that give it its full measure. Facing a BMW R 1200 GS or a Yamaha Super Ténéré, it brings a different personality and musicality. This is its main asset, and for some, it will be a sufficient reason.
