Overview

Who could possibly need 2,458 cc spread across three cylinders just to go for a ride on the open road? Triumph, apparently, and the Hinckley firm persists in its gentle madness with this 2024 vintage Rocket III R Storm. The name hits like a thunderclap, and that's no coincidence. The British brand had already played this card on the Thunderbird 1700 in the early 2010s, with some success. This time, it's the sacred monster of the lineup that inherits the suffix, and everything it implies.

Triumph 2500 Rocket III R Storm

Visually, the Storm plays the intimidation card. Triumph has dipped nearly the entire motorcycle in a bath of black: exhaust, fenders, fork yokes, caliper brackets, controls, radiator scoops. Only the fuel cap and the seat spine escape the treatment. One immediately thinks of the 2021 Black special edition, except here a splash of color breaks the monotony on the flank of the 18-liter tank. The result exudes a muted, almost primal aggression. This motorcycle doesn't try to seduce. It commands.

Beneath that dark attire, the longitudinal triple gains some bite. The standard Rocket III's 167 hp, reached at 6,000 rpm, climbs to 182 hp delivered 1,000 revs higher, at 7,000 rpm. Until now, only the ultra-exclusive TFC version had access to this power surplus. To achieve it, Triumph reworked the compression ratio, revised the valves, and modified the camshafts. Torque also climbs by 4 Nm, peaking at 225 Nm from just 4,000 rpm. Against a 1,923 cc Harley-Davidson V-twin in the Fat Bob 117, the comparison is over before it starts: the British engine literally crushes the American competition in raw figures. And all of this while meeting the Euro 5+ standard, which is no small feat for such a gargantuan powerplant.

The chassis, for its part, sees almost no changes. Triumph settled for redesigning the wheels, shedding one kilo, and fitting them with Metzeler Cruisetec tires. The aluminum frame remains identical, as does the 47 mm Showa inverted fork and the rear monoshock. At 317 kg wet, the Rocket III will never make a Diavel V4 look like a heavyweight. Yet everyone who has ridden it confirms: it handles with a disconcerting ease for its size. The braking contributes to that confidence, with Brembo Stylema four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs up front, and an equally serious setup at the rear with a 300 mm disc. On a machine capable of hitting 240 km/h, it's a necessity.

On the equipment front, no revolution. ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, cruise control, hill start assist, and four riding modes are all carried over. The quickshifter remains optional, as do connectivity and heated grips. The seat, perched at just 773 mm, places the rider in a more aggressive posture than the GT version, which is clearly custom-oriented. The TFT instrumentation, keyless ignition, and full LED lighting round out an electronic package that's respectable without being cutting-edge. At €26,395, the Rocket III R Storm targets a very specific clientele: experienced riders who want a unique machine, capable of turning every twist of the throttle into a seismic event. Not a rational motorcycle. A statement.
