Overview
Eight machines. That's all Triumph decided to brand with golden iron within its Bonneville family for the year 2022. The Speedmaster is among this handful of chosen few, dressed for the occasion in a combination of icy grey and sapphire black, cut through with hand-applied pinstripes — drawn in a single stroke — then sealed beneath a coat of lacquer. A craftsman signs each example with their initials. This is not an additional marketing argument tossed into a brochure; it is a stance, almost a manifesto, that makes clear exactly which type of buyer this motorcycle is aimed at.

That type of buyer is not looking for raw performance. They are looking for distinction. And on that ground, the Speedmaster Gold Line plays a very different game from what Milwaukee has to offer. Where a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail displays an unabashedly American identity, chromed to excess, Triumph cultivates a British restraint that ultimately proves more persuasive. The steel double-cradle frame, the shock absorber hidden beneath the seat to mimic the rigid aesthetic of older machines, the wire-spoke wheels shod in 130/90-16 at the front and 150/80-16 at the rear — everything contributes to a visual coherence that few customs achieve at this price level. At €15,650, this is certainly far from entry-level, but the care given to the finish justifies a portion of the bill.
Mechanically, the 1,200 cc parallel-twin produces 78 horsepower at 6,100 rpm, a figure slightly lower than that of the Bonneville T120. But the Speedmaster never claimed to chase that particular hare. This engine is tuned to deliver 105.9 Nm of torque from 4,000 rpm, a figure that translates concretely into a frank and linear throttle response, without unnecessary nervousness. On a machine weighing 263 kg fully fuelled, that low-rev flexibility is welcome. The six-speed gearbox works cleanly, the chain is unobtrusive, and the claimed top speed of 180 km/h is more than sufficient for the real-world use of this type of machine.
The riding position deserves a closer look. The wide handlebar demands elbows held out, the forward footpegs place the legs almost horizontal, and the 705 mm seat height makes touching down easy even for shorter riders. This is pure cruiser, conceived for swallowing national roads in a relaxed posture rather than attacking a series of bends. The 12-litre tank remains the weak point for range, especially if a sustained pace is maintained. The brakes, with two 310 mm discs at the front and a 255 mm disc at the rear, do their job without any particular sporting ambition — which is perfectly consistent with the character of the machine.
The Speedmaster Gold Line is aimed at a public that already knows motorcycling, that has perhaps passed through a sporting phase and is returning to something more settled, more visual. This is not a motorcycle for beginners — the weight and bulk demand a certain mastery at low speed. Nor is it a tourer capable of absorbing 500-kilometre stages. It is a carefully crafted custom, produced in limited numbers, whose value rests as much on what it represents as on what it does. Triumph has long understood that selling a motorcycle also means selling a sense of belonging. The Gold Line is the most accomplished demonstration of that.
