Overview
It was impossible to escape the wave of large twins in the early 2000s. Everyone was launching their chromed behemoth, and Suzuki, a little behind, chose the path of efficiency. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the firm from Hamamatsu simply signed a cooperation agreement with Kawasaki and released the VZ 1600 Marauder. Don't be fooled, this is not a simple copy, it is outright the Siamese twin of the Mean Streak, sharing even its frame and engine. We are talking about a 1552 cm3 V-twin engine, which delivers 74 horsepower at 5300 rpm and, above all, a monstrous torque of 118 Nm from 2800 rpm. This is the very definition of low-cost propulsion, an engine that pulls like a tractor as soon as you graze the throttle.

The difference between the two Japanese models lies in aesthetic details: a redesigned rear fender and a headlight, and an exclusive blue color for Suzuki. For the rest, it's pure kawa-suzuki. The technical equipment is solid, with a shaft drive that avoids chains to be tightened and an inverted 43 mm fork at the front. The braking system, with its two 320 mm discs at the front pinched by six-piston calipers, inspires confidence to stop the beast's 290 kilograms dry weight. On the road, it behaves as expected: stable, comfortable, and with exemplary linearity thanks to its torquey engine. Top speed is around 180 km/h, but that's not its forte. It is made to swallow highway miles or long national roads without ever tiring you.
The price, however, is a point of friction. At 12,999 euros, the Marauder is in the same price range as its cousin at Kawasaki, but also in direct competition with base Harley-Davidson or Triumph Rocket III models that offer a more distinct identity. You buy this Suzuki for pragmatism, for its factory reliability and riding comfort, not for its character or originality. It is an efficient machine, but without soul, a pure product of industrial rationalization.
This large custom is aimed at the traveler who seeks above all ease and serenity. A beginner on a machine of this size is possible thanks to its accessible torque and low center of gravity, with a 700 mm seat. But its weight and size make it a little agile in the city. It is on the open road that it makes sense, a motorcycle for those who want to travel far without mechanical complications. It does the job, without frills, without madness. An honest motorcycle, but which sorely lacks that spark that makes you dream. In the world of large customs, it is the choice of reason, never that of the heart.
