Overview
At what price can one buy a motorcycle that wanted to be a Ducati? Suzuki attempted the feat in 1998 with the TL 1000 R, a superbike designed for the world championship, but which ultimately found its place elsewhere. By taking the base of the TL 1000 S, the roadster, and grafting on an aluminum twin-spar frame, an inverted fork, and a SRAD, the objective was clear: to rival Italian V-twins on the track. The engine, this 996 cc V2, was seriously reworked, with two injectors per cylinder and optimized intakes. It officially delivered 135 horsepower, but tuners know that it could approach 150, with some even extracting nearly 180 horsepower. The technical specifications promised, with a torque of 106 Nm and a theoretical top speed of 260 km/h.

However, on the track, the promise was not kept. The weight, 230 kg fully fueled, was its Achilles' heel. Even with a sophisticated rotary damper and extensive settings, it lacked the necessary agility to truly threaten a Ducati 916. That’s where the test of the Suzuki TL 1000 R takes an interesting turn. Away from the lap times, outside the paddocks, this machine reveals a different character. The front end is of remarkable efficiency and safety, and the traction of this big twin is a real pleasure. The engine, powerful and charismatic, offers addictive propulsion, although the 17-liter tank imposes frequent stops.
Its public is therefore not the pure track rider, but rather the sporty tourer looking for a substantial alternative to Japanese inline-fours. The position, admittedly committed, provides relative comfort and the protection is acceptable. At the time, its price of 10,989 euros represented an interesting offer for a motorcycle with such a pedigree. Today, finding a used Suzuki TL 1000 R, perhaps in Belgium, is a chance to seize a piece of history, a superbike that failed in its primary mission but shone through its unique character. It remains a balanced motorcycle, a little heavy but consistent, whose mechanical potential and riding pleasure are its true victories.
