Overview

Motorcycle: Suzuki SFV 650 GLADIUS BOSS (2014)

Suzuki SFV 650 GLADIUS BOSS

There’s always this story about design that sparks debate at Suzuki. We had the SV 650, a friendly and effective brute that marked the years. Then came the Gladius, with its softer curves, a face almost too polished for the V-twin audience. Some said it was coy, that it lacked character. But in 2014, Suzuki decided to give it a dose of toughness, or at least a more assertive attitude, with this BOSS version.

The transformation is visual, but it counts. We move from a rather conventional look to a deep black, aggressively highlighted with yellow on the tank sides and inscriptions. The inspiration comes from the Intruder M1800R, that large cruiser, and it offers a more solid, less ambiguous presence. In addition to this paint scheme, it benefits from a consistent accessory kit: end caps, specific handlebar ends, protection pads, revised footrests, and a rear assembly with a license plate holder and specific taillight. The element that closes the package, and radically changes the game, is the Yoshimura exhaust offered as an option. The original muffler, often considered too discreet, is replaced by a branded component, which releases a little more of the V-twin’s voice and adds a technical touch.

But beneath this new skin, the mechanics remain faithful to what made the SV successful. The 90° L-twin, with a displacement of 645 cc, delivers 72 horsepower at 8400 rpm and a torque of 62.8 Nm at 6400 rpm. This engine is a benchmark in terms of progressiveness and ease of use. It pulls from low revs, without abruptness, and offers a very wide usable range, ideal for the city or winding roads. With a wet weight of 202 kg and a seat height of 785 mm, it remains accessible, even for beginners or those looking for an uncomplicated everyday motorcycle.

The tubular trellis frame, the 41 mm fork and the mono-shock offer honest handling, rather oriented towards comfort and stability. The braking system, with two 290 mm discs at the front and one 220 mm at the rear, is effective without being oversized, corresponding to the spirit of the machine. You can choose the version with ABS, a welcome safety feature for primarily road use. The top speed is announced at 200 km/h, which is sufficient for most situations, but we are clearly far from the performance of a sportbike.

Ultimately, this Gladius BOSS is an interesting proposition for those looking for an everyday motorcycle, with a slightly more assertive character than the standard version. It does not rival the nervousness of a then-new MT-07, nor the pure pedigree of the original SV 650. Its audience? The touring rider who wants a simple, reliable machine with a touch of integrated personalization, or the novice who wants a first motorcycle capable without being intimidating. At 5999 euros, it positions itself as an equipped and styled option in the affordable middleweight family. It doesn't revolutionize the genre, but it provides an answer to those who criticized the Gladius for its lack of boldness. A well-dosed dose of virility, in short.
