Overview
Who in the world of motorcycling hasn't heard the name Hayabusa? It's like evoking the Concorde in aeronautics, a myth forged in steel and extravagance. We're talking about the 2005 generation, the one that solidified the legend long before the new 2021 Suzuki Hayabusa came to refresh the myth. With its 175 horsepower delivered by a 1300 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine, it was more than just a brute. It was a statement of intent, a challenge thrown down to physics and, let's be honest, to all forms of road wisdom. At the time, its new price hovered around €13,300, an investment to access a very closed circle.

The magic of this engine is that it plays on all fronts. At low RPM, it’s as smooth as a limousine, effortlessly pulling this 250 kg behemoth fully loaded. But exceed 7000 rpm, where its 138 Nm of torque already sets the tone, and the beast changes its nature. The last third of the tachometer is a descent into hell, a furious and linear surge that seals you to the saddle. Compared to the more civilized engine of a contemporary Honda CBR1100 XX Blackbird, the Suzuki Hayabusa engine is theatrical, expressive, almost mean. It constantly reminds you that the maximum speed approaches 317 km/h, a figure that still makes people dream and explains why searching for a used Suzuki Hayabusa remains a quest for many.
And just so, piloting this mass is the biggest surprise. You expect a truck, you discover an agile cargo ship. The twin-spar aluminum frame and fully adjustable suspension work miracles. The weight disappears on engagement, the machine leans with disconcerting docility. Of course, with a wheelbase of nearly 1.5 meters, it doesn't have the agility of a 600 on a twisty road, but its stability is monumental. The drawback? A ground clearance of 120 mm that makes the footpegs scrape at the slightest serious attack. That’s the price to pay for this flattened silhouette, designed to slice through the air.
Because that’s where the problem lies. This aerodynamics optimized for the record transforms the rider into a sailboat from 160 km/h. Without a tall windscreen, long journeys become a battle. The braking, although powerful with its two front discs, lacked bite and feedback on these models, a point that Suzuki corrected later. But these flaws are the scars of an extreme machine. It doesn't target the average rider, but the true enthusiast, the one who seeks the ultimate sensation, even if it means managing its excesses. Today, finding a 1999 or 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa on the classifieds is acquiring a piece of history, an icon that marked its time long before we talk about the Suzuki Hayabusa 2023 and its current price. It’s a motorcycle that doesn’t ask to be tamed, but respected. Advice: if you try one, beware of the second. At its maximum RPM, you no longer have a license... and you may have already reached the limit of your courage.
