Overview

The GSX-S950 wouldn’t have appreciated entering 2025 without a bit more modernity, especially since its 1000 sibling chose to enter the year with a new TFT screen. The 9.5 will also be equipped with a 5-inch color display. In addition to displaying multiple onboard information, it can automatically or manually switch between day/night modes and notifies the rider of alerts and updates via pop-up windows. There are no other changes to report, other than the engine’s compliance with new regulations.

The roadster has had a good run at Suzuki. With the Bandit, the SV650, the GSR... for a few years now, it's the GSX-S models that have defended the stronghold. Especially the 750 and the 1000 as the battles approach.

Here’s the model that takes over the mid-size baton. With an identification as the 950, it slots in between... Well, no. It doesn't position itself at all between the 750 and the 1000; it replaces the 750, nuance. Behind the robotic stepped headlight, this streetfighter raises some questions.

Pride of the design team? Extension of the identity? Economies of scale and development? We don’t immediately ask ourselves these kinds of questions when we see this GSX-S. Whatever the angle from which we observe it, it seems built in the same mold as the 1000. And that’s the case! Every piece of bodywork, the entire set of metal or mechanical parts, the top, the front, and the fate of the bolts are all consistent with the big sister. This reminds us of the good old days of the 600-750-1000 GSX-R from the early 2000s, where the mimicry was such that recognizing each one was a matter of detail points (stickers, type of fork, swingarm reinforcement,...). So, is it a 1000 with a mid-size name? Like the BMW F 750 / 850 GS which have the same engine but different mapping? Suzuki is playing a poker move, with a very particular full.

The name is misleading; in more ways than one. Enough to disorient if one only looks at the numbers. Let's start by clarifying the displacement. It is 999 cm3, exactly like on the largest of the GSX-S - since they share the same block derived from the GSX-R. Bore, stroke, cases, materials, everything is the same. Only the mapping changes to allow it to output 95 horsepower. That’s where we start to get lost. 20 horsepower less than a GSX-S 750...? With a larger engine...? Same and similar? It’s more complicated than that. Suzuki thought about young riders; therefore, the power is calibrated to be bridable to 35 kW. Where the 950 will make its difference and justify its positioning is through the large torque it will offer the user.

Whether in A2 or full power, the Nine and a half will distribute more torque and availability than the 750 in similar configurations. In 35 kW, it’s 1.4 mkg more, obtained at only 3250 rpm (against 4000). The gap is even greater in 70 kW: 1.7 mkg with 1500 rpm lead for the 950 (at 6500 rpm). Briefly, the machine plays on its displacement to send more steak with the same power. Face A: 47.5 hp and 7.8 mkg / Face B: 95 hp and 9.4 mkg.

The brand thus offers a totally different choice from other motorcycles in the category. Most opt for a gross hundred horsepower and a specific A2 version in parallel. But should this GSX-S then be compared to a Tuono 660 of the same power with less torque? Or to an MT-09 more generous in watts but inaccessible for the A2? Well, here it is – the GSX-S950 is the border between the two.

The fact that the 1000 and the 950 share the same engine block, have an identical face and design, threaten with a similar raw growl, accuse exactly the same weight of 214 kilos, expose the same dimensions... does not mean they are twins. The differences are there, barely visible, and will justify both the price delta and the effectiveness on the road. Between the two is specified:- Up&Down shifter / no shifter- Fully adjustable fork / no adjustment- LED turn signals / incandescent bulbs- Traction control with 5 levels, disconnectable / with 3 levels, disconnectable- S-DMS with 3 Riding Modes / No Riding Modes- Brembo brake calipers / Tokico calipers- Different handlebar mounting

The discs have managed to retain their 310 mm diameter, the tank its 19 liters, and the wheels their Dunlop Roadsport 2 of 120/70 and 190/50. We saw that the KYB inverted fork of 43 mm cannot be adjusted. However, the rear shock allows you to play on the rebound and preload. By the way, let's recall that the frame and the swingarm come from the GSX-R 1000 version 2007, that the clutch is assisted and equipped with an anti-dribble, that the Easy Start and Low RPM functions are part of the package, and that the Riding Modes are still not planned.

The Suzuki GSX-S950 awaits the A2 riders to show them that you can have a firm foot and a swollen boot – even if you can initially think it’s a 1000 deflated. It has all the attributes but its personality is quite different. A surprise that requires curiosity to grasp its subtleties. GSX-S950... A new-era 1200 Bandit?
