Overview
Remember the context of the late 2000s. The middleweight roadster segment was raging between the Honda Hornet, the Kawasaki Z750 and the Yamaha FZ6, and Hamamatsu was struggling to exist in this niche with its Bandit, likable but too tamed. The counterattack arrived under three letters heavy with promise, a fusion of in-house codes between the GSF lineage and the sporty R caste. The Suzuki GSR 600 motorcycle was born from this marriage, with a clear intention: to plant a supersport four-cylinder engine in the chassis of an aggressive naked bike.

Beneath the stocky bodywork lies the mechanical heart of the inline four-cylinder from the 2005 GSX-R 600, recalibrated to serve road use. The technical sheet of the Suzuki GSR 600 announces 98 horsepower at 12,000 rpm and 64.6 Nm of torque at 9,600 rpm, for 208 kg fully fueled on the scale. The aluminum perimeter frame and the muscular swingarm betray the sporty origin of the chassis, while the seat planted at 785 mm and the 1440 mm wheelbase keep the machine accessible. At its release in 2006, its new price hovered around 6,999 euros, a price that placed it right in the thick of the Japanese rival fray.
Aesthetically, the designer clearly drew from the B-King concept presented at the show, with this tank with pillar-like shoulders and these side exhaust pipes in the MV Agusta F4 style. It's massive, angular, almost caricatural, and that's precisely what hits the mark in dealerships. The dashboard with gear indicator brings a welcome modern touch, inherited from the latest GSX-R. On the road, the 600 cm3 displays the classic temperament of stripped-down supersports: hollow below 6,000 rpm, lively from 7,000, frankly explosive beyond 10,000, pushing the machine up to 214 km/h at top speed. The smoothness of the four-cylinder is undoubtedly the most refined of the lineup, but a capricious injection mapping causes an unpleasant jolt when reapplying the throttle. A known flaw, which can be worked on by a good tuner.
In terms of behavior, stability takes precedence over agility. Where the Hornet turns with a flick of the ankle, the GSR demands that you commit to tip it onto its angle. In return, it stays riveted to the asphalt on the highway and offers a seat comfort unusual for this type of machine, soft suspensions included. The front brake with twin discs pinched by four-piston calipers nevertheless lacks progressive bite, another point on which the competition was then doing better. For restricted licenses, the Suzuki GSR 600 A2 variant at 34 horsepower opens the door to young license holders, who will thus inherit a true evolutionary machine rather than a learning toy.
Today, the used Suzuki GSR 600 represents an interesting gateway to the Japanese four-cylinder, provided you target a well-maintained example. The 2007 and 2009 model years correct a few finishing details compared to the original 2006, without a mechanical revolution.
