Overview

Spotting a V-Strom 1050 XT in a mountain pass parking lot takes no more than a glance. This version, dressed in retro-pop graphics directly inherited from Suzuki's adventure bikes of the 1990s, embraces a divisive aesthetic that the standard model wisely chose to avoid. The spoked wheels complete the picture, and the result is clear-cut: you either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Suzuki set out to pull its versatile tourer out of anonymity, and the mission is accomplished.

Suzuki 1050 V-Strom XT

Behind that assertive look, the XT stacks up the concrete arguments. The 1037 cc L-twin engine receives reworked cylinder heads that allow it to deliver 107 horsepower at 8,500 rpm, a significant gain over the previous generation. Torque peaks at 100 Nm at 6,000 rpm, slightly behind the old 101 Nm figure, and above all available higher in the rev range. This upward shift can blunt the V-twin's low-end character — the natural generosity at mid-throttle that made loaded tourers so happy. The additional oil cooler and Euro5 compliance nonetheless reflect serious work on thermal management. For those just starting out or returning after a break, a restricted A2 version has also been available since 2021.

What truly sets the XT apart from its standard sibling is the equipment. The SIRS electronic package centralizes a three-level traction control system, ABS coupled to an IMU inertial measurement unit that adapts braking to lean angle, a low-rpm engine braking control, a wheelie control, a hill-start assist, and a cruise control. The ride-by-wire throttle distributes three engine maps according to the rider's mood. On the physical side, the XT adds aluminum engine guards, a tubular crash bar, hand guards, a seat adjustable to two heights at 850 mm, a center stand, and a windscreen adjustable across eleven positions — though the latter can only be operated while stationary, standing in front of the bike. With the optional panniers, the USB port on the dashboard, and the 12V socket under the seat, long-distance touring is clearly the intended horizon. All of this comes at a cost in weight: the machine tips the scales at 247 kg fully fuelled, eleven kilograms more than the standard.

The chassis, meanwhile, is unchanged — and that's good news. The aluminum twin-spar perimeter frame remains a rarity in this segment, lending the V-Strom a directional precision that some steel-framed competitors simply cannot match. The 43 mm KYB inverted fork offers 160 mm of travel, as does the rear monoshock, both adjustable for preload and rebound. The Tokico four-piston radially mounted calipers on 310 mm front discs have been working with precision on this platform for years. Nothing to fault here — the consistency is there. The 20-litre tank promises comfortable range on long stages.

Faced with a BMW R 1250 GS or a Ducati Multistrada V2, the V-Strom 1050 XT makes no claim to compete in the same technological league. The LCD screen looks pale beside the touchscreen colour TFTs of the premium competition, and smartphone connectivity remains absent. Suzuki accepts this mid-range positioning to maintain a price of €14,899, consistent with a clientele of serious tourers who seek reliability and versatility without paying for brand prestige. This has always been the V-Strom's audience: riders who are demanding about mechanics and indifferent to badges. The XT simply offers them more active safety and more protection, without changing the essence of the project. A well-defined territory, held with method.
