Overview
Suzuki has never managed to establish a proper large touring motorcycle to rival the German heavyweights. Rather than fighting on unfavorable ground, Hamamatsu chose a different strategy: transforming its maxi-trail into a travel machine. The 2014 V-Strom 1000 Tourer is the result of this pragmatic thinking. Not a revolution, but a calculated evolution for those who want to eat up the miles without breaking the bank.

The standard equipment list is impressive. Three hard cases to start with — 35 liters in the top case, 29 on the left and 26 on the right, with the exhaust nibbling into some of that volume on the right side. Add a Touring screen raised 50 mm over the standard model, hand guards for rainy days, engine guards for rough tracks, and a centerstand for oil changes far from home. The whole package is topped off with a few aesthetic touches, including LED turn signals and an engine spoiler. On paper, it's generous.
The 90-degree V-twin displacing 1037 cc remains the heart of the machine. Its 100 horsepower peak at 8,000 rpm, and more importantly, its 103 Nm of torque arrives as low as 4,000 rpm — which matters a great deal when you're hauling 250 kilograms fully loaded with luggage on top. The Suzuki twin has neither the fury of the Multistrada 1200's Testastretta nor the sharp character of the KTM parallel twin, but it delivers honest, progressive power that's equally pleasant on winding roads and on the motorway. The 43 mm inverted fork, four-piston radial calipers on 310 mm discs, ABS, and traction control round out an aluminum twin-spar chassis that gets the job done without ever dazzling. The 850 mm seat height remains a challenge for shorter riders — an absolute must-test before buying.
This V-Strom Tourer clearly targets the sensible long-distance rider, the one who wants to cross Europe or ride an entire season without worrying about the wallet. At €14,599, the proposition is hard to ignore when a base BMW R 1200 GS easily clears that price with no touring equipment whatsoever. The gap in performance and prestige exists — no one will deny it — but the Suzuki delivers the essentials in a single invoice. Against the KTM 1190 Adventure or the Ducati Multistrada, the price argument is even stronger, even if those machines outclass the V-Strom in outright dynamics.
The real criticism that can be leveled at this Tourer version comes down to its weight. The stated 250 kilograms is probably an optimistic estimate once the panniers are loaded, and the handling becomes less natural than on the naked V-Strom as a result. But that's the implicit trade-off of this kind of grand touring package. The urban rider or the motorcyclist chasing raw thrills will look elsewhere. For the touring rider who prioritizes comfort over distance, the range from the 20-liter tank, and the protection offered by the tall screen, this V-Strom Tourer represents a coherent and honest choice in a segment dominated by machines that cost twice as much.
