Overview
Imagine an Italian hypersport bike sold at the price of a Japanese inline-four. The idea is surprising in 2015, yet it's the gamble taken by the mv agusta f4 1000 in its 2015 vintage. Its positioning is a bolt-from-the-blue strategy, slipping the Queen of Varese just below the psychological barrier of twenty thousand euros to capture sportbike riders who had their eyes on a CBR 1000 RR or a GSX-R 1000. At 18,990 euros list price, the beast affords itself the luxury of existing alongside its big sister the mv agusta f4 1000 rr without overshadowing it, embracing its role as the entry point into the family.

This entry-level positioning has to be understood by subtraction. The Öhlins NIX fork gives way to an inverted 50 mm Marzocchi, the rear shock becomes a triple-adjustable Sachs, the front calipers go from the Brembo M50 monobloc to the M4 with radial mounting biting on two 320 mm discs. A handful of horsepower is lost in the transition, but the Corsa Corta inline-four still delivers 195 horsepower at 13,400 rpm and 110.8 Nm at 9,600 rpm, for 191 kilos dry. The power-to-weight ratio remains formidable, and the announced top speed of 291 km/h is enough to remind you we're talking about a genuinely honed weapon. The very oversquare bore and stroke of 79 x 50.9 mm and compression ratio of 13.4 to 1 sketch out a high-revving engine, one that lives in the upper rpm range and demands to be whipped, not a block for bucolic rides.
Where the bike saves face is in its onboard electronics. The MVICS suite controlled by the ELDOR ECU offers four mappings, including one fully configurable, a precise ride-by-wire, eight-level traction control informed by an inertial measurement unit, anti-wheelie, a quickshifter, and a Bosch 9MP ABS in Race version. On this front, the mv agusta f4 1000 competes without blushing against a Panigale 1199 of the same era, which often required optional packs to reach the same level of sophistication. The ingredients that make up the house signature are also kept: sculptural single-sided rear swingarm, forged wheels, chrome-molybdenum steel trellis married to aluminum side plates, four cathedral-style exhausts beneath the saddle perched at 830 mm.
On the ergonomics side, let's not kid ourselves. Plunging clip-ons, high footpegs, a 17-liter tank that you end up gripping between your thighs, a stiff seat — the machine has never really forgiven commutes. The tourer will walk on by, the urban rider will flee, and even the beginner will lose their license before having exploited the first third of the rev counter. It's a machine for a seasoned rider, ideally cut out for track days and winding roads devoured at a brisk pace, much like what the mv agusta f4 1000 ago dedicated to old Giacomo was, or the mv agusta f4 1000 lewis hamilton special series that made its mark in the 2010s.
That leaves the reliability file, a sensitive subject that hangs over every vintage, from the inaugural mv agusta f4 1000 2004 up to the mv agusta f4 1000 2006, mv agusta f4 1000 2010 or mv agusta f4 1000 2013. Maintenance on the mv agusta f4 1000 remains expensive, throttle body synchronizations and valve adjustments weigh on the service book, and a used mv agusta f4 1000 systematically demands a rock-solid history before signing. At this price, you're buying a piece of industrial sculpture that happens to go fast. Rationally debatable, emotionally irresistible.
