Overview
What sets an Italian sportbike apart from a high-performing Japanese one? Soul, the romantics will answer. Price, the pragmatists will retort. With the MV Agusta F3 800 R, 2025 vintage, Varese attempts to reconcile both camps. This R version picks up the torch from the former Rosso, discontinued in 2023, with a clear positioning: deliver the essence of the F3 temperament in a less ostentatious package, and above all at a slightly more contained price point. At 19,000 euros, you're still in MV territory, but a notch below the more exclusive variants in the lineup.

Don't let the "entry-level" label fool you. Beneath the fully black fairing accented with a vivid red that evokes Maranello more than Bologna, the 798 cc triple delivers 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 88 Nm of torque from 10,100 rpm. The 13.3:1 compression ratio betrays an engine engineered for performance. Engineers applied a DLC coating to the valves, replaced connecting rods and bearings to reduce internal friction, and completely redesigned the exhaust system. The result is a Euro 5–compliant powerplant that has admittedly lost one horsepower in the transition, but gains smoothness in the midrange. The third-generation bidirectional quickshifter, fitted with a refined sensor, turns every gear change into a crisp, precise snap through the six-speed gearbox.
On the chassis side, the recipe stays true to the house DNA. The tubular steel trellis frame, paired with stiffened aluminum side plates, hosts a 43 mm inverted fork and a mono-shock offering 125 and 130 mm of travel respectively. Nothing revolutionary, but a coherent package that keeps the 173 kg dry weight in a formidable balance. The real gain of this generation lies in the braking: radially mounted Brembo Stylema calipers bite two 320 mm discs up front. Reference-grade hardware, identical to what you find on sportbikes priced far higher. With this level of equipment, the F3 can rub elbows with a Ducati Panigale V2 or a Triumph Daytona 660, even if each occupies a slightly different niche in terms of displacement and philosophy.
The electronics have taken a significant leap forward. The inertial measurement unit now enables Continental-supplied Cornering ABS, a recalibrated traction control, and a wheelie control that no longer simply cuts power abruptly. Four riding modes supervise the whole package, complemented by launch control for standing starts. The 5.5-inch color TFT display finally replaces the aging LCD, and communicates with the MV Ride app to adjust parameters or mirror navigation. Cruise control also makes an appearance — a welcome gadget on a machine nobody buys for motorway cruising at 130.
The MV Agusta F3 800 R is aimed at a demanding rider, one capable of appreciating the mechanical nobility of an Italian triple and willing to live with a seat perched at 830 mm, a 16.5-liter tank that limits range, and an after-sales network less extensive than those of Japanese manufacturers. More than ten years after the birth of the F3 lineage in 675 guise, its lines remain among the most beautiful in the sportbike segment. This R version strips away a bit of makeup to let the engineering speak for itself. It may be the most honest way into the MV universe.
