Overview
What sets an Italian sportbike apart from a mere fast motorcycle? A touch of madness, probably. That ability to turn your head before you even turn the key. The MV Agusta F3 800 R, introduced in 2023 as the successor to the Rosso, embodies this philosophy with unapologetic brutality. Don't look for a technical revolution between the two designations. Varese mainly took advantage of the handover to beef up the braking with radially mounted Brembo Stylema calipers, redesign the front headlight, and switch the rear turn signals to LED. The kind of targeted update that transforms daily use without upending the recipe.

Beneath the sculptural fairing, the 798 cc triple-cylinder develops 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm with 88 Nm of torque available from 10,100 rpm. Euro5 compliance cost it one horsepower, a minimal concession for an engine that remains ferocious in the upper rev range. The engineers worked extensively to offset this regulatory constraint. DLC coating on the valves, revised connecting rods and bearings, higher-performance injectors, recalibrated ECU, radiator gaining 5% in efficiency. The exhaust system, entirely redesigned with its three angular-shaped outlets, contributes as much to engine filling as it does to the aggressive aesthetics of the whole package. With a compression ratio of 13.3:1 and an ultra-short stroke of 79 x 54.3 mm, this triple loves climbing through the revs like few engines can.
On the chassis side, the tubular steel trellis frame bolted to reinforced aluminium plates retains its razor-sharp geometry. The 43 mm inverted fork offers 125 mm of travel, the rear monoshock 130 mm. All this for a dry weight of 173 kg, which places the MV Agusta F3 800 R in the featherweight category against a noticeably heavier Ducati Panigale V2. The tyres in 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 reflect a clear vocation: tight corners, rapid direction changes, surgical precision. The 16.5-litre tank allows for decent track sessions without constant refuelling, even if nobody buys this machine to cross the country.
The electronics have taken a notable step forward. The inertial measurement unit now controls a Continental Cornering ABS, refined traction control, and a wheelie control system that replaces the old basic anti-wheelie. Four riding modes oversee the package, supplemented by Launch Control for blistering starts. The third-generation bidirectional quickshifter gains precision thanks to a new sensor, and the 5.5-inch colour TFT display, connected to the MV Ride app, finally replaces the ageing LCD. You configure your rider aids from your phone, record your lines. Useful for improving, superfluous for showing off.
The positioning of this R version deserves a closer look. Within the MV Agusta range, it represents the pure sportbike entry point, where the Superveloce plays the neo-retro glamour card without the same level of radicalness. The vivid red livery on a full black background breaks from the brand's traditional grey and orange-red tones, evoking Maranello more than Borgo Panigale. At €19,000, the bill remains steep compared to a Yamaha R7 or even the base-spec Panigale V2. But what you're paying for here is exclusivity, noble engineering, and a design that, more than ten years after the birth of the original F3 in 675 guise, continues to take your breath away. This motorcycle is aimed at demanding riders, those who want a middleweight sportbike capable of going toe-to-toe with the big bikes on a twisty circuit, and who accept paying the price of Lombardy craftsmanship. The 240 km/h top speed is more than enough to remind you that on this machine, the stopwatch is won in the corners, not on the straights.
