Overview
When MV Agusta decided to rename its Dragster Rosso to Dragster R, it wasn't just a matter of lettering. Red is no longer the sole livery, and the name had to follow suit. Behind this label change, however, lies a very real update for the 2023 model year: recalibrated ride-by-wire throttle, reworked seat, Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires as standard fitment, refined rear braking, and anti-friction coated fork tubes. Surgical tweaks, not a revolution. The MV Agusta Dragster R remains the entry ticket into the Dragster range — the one you choose when you want the style without the extra power and price tag imposed by the RR.

Beneath the tubular steel trellis frame, the 798 cc inline triple with counter-rotating crankshaft delivers 112 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 10,250 rpm. This engine, shared across MV Agusta's entire R lineup, runs a 13.3:1 compression ratio and a bore/stroke of 79 x 54.3 mm. A mill that clearly loves to rev. The sound of the Italian triple remains a selling point in its own right, and the three redesigned exhaust outlets give it a look that neither the Triumph Street Triple nor the Yamaha MT-09 can claim. At 160 kg dry, the Dragster R plays in a featherweight class that its competitors eye with envy. The claimed top speed of 244 km/h confirms that the sporty temperament hasn't been sacrificed on the altar of accessibility.
The onboard electronics run on the MVICS 2.1 platform, shared across all of Varese's production. Four riding modes govern engine mapping, traction control, throttle sensitivity, and engine braking. The Continental MK100 ABS, cornering-capable thanks to the inertial measurement unit, is as reassuring as it is impressive at this price point. The third-generation bidirectional quickshifter and cruise control round out an equipment package that the 5.5-inch color TFT display — Bluetooth-connected with integrated navigation — makes easy to exploit. For a machine listed at 17,500 euros, the level of standard equipment is serious.
On the chassis side, the kinship with the Brutale 800 is fully acknowledged. 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, progressive Sachs shock, single-sided swingarm, Brembo radial-mount four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs. The difference comes down to the wider 200 mm rear tire, which contributes to that stocky, muscular stance. The 1,400 mm wheelbase and seat perched at 845 mm create a forward-oriented riding position, with clip-on handlebars adjustable in three positions to fine-tune upper body commitment. The 16.5-liter tank, combined with fuel consumption of 5.9 L/100 km, limits range to under 280 kilometers. You don't go touring on a Dragster — you take it out for the sheer thrill.

Let's be frank: the MV Agusta Dragster R is not a new motorcycle. It's a Brutale whose rear end has been sculpted with a scalpel, with a more aggressive riding position and a few distinctive aesthetic touches. But the formula works. The truncated profile, the abrupt tail section, the minimalism of the no-frills black or red color schemes give this machine a presence that few nakeds can match. It's aimed at the rider who wants to stand out without tipping into the excess of the RR — the one who accepts paying the Italian premium for an object that looks like nothing else in a parking lot. Against a Street Triple RS or an MT-09 SP, it concedes in pragmatism what it gains in character. And at MV Agusta, character has never been optional.
