Overview
Who would dare retouch a Tamburini masterpiece? MV Agusta, as it happens, with this 2010 vintage Brutale 990R. The Varese manufacturer is walking on eggshells, because tampering with one of the most recognizable designs in the naked bike market is like restoring a Renaissance fresco with a paint roller. Ducati, faced with the same dilemma with the Monster, had cut to the chase by starting from a blank sheet. MV chooses the path of subtlety: 85% of the motorcycle is modified, yet the untrained eye would swear it's merely a transitional model year. That's the fine art of Italian evolution.

The headlight, with its Porsche 911 overtones that give the MV Agusta Brutale 990R its distinctive flavor, retains its familiar silhouette but gains a double row of LEDs serving as running lights. The instrument panel, meanwhile, finally turns the page on a decade-old design inherited from the F4. The new cluster gains readability with a gear position indicator, a temperature bar graph, and a fuel gauge. Details, some will say. Details that change daily life, owners will reply. The turn signals migrate into the mirrors, the tail section welcomes new LED lights that nod toward Bologna, and the beast's name is now engraved on the rear cowl. The Brutale remains sculptural, but it has traded its rough-hewn edge for a form of maturity.
Beneath the bodywork, the work runs deeper than it appears. The TIG-welded CrMo steel trellis frame has been revised for greater compactness and lighter weight, with the steering head angle opened by half a degree to 25°. The swingarm is lengthened by 20 mm, bringing the wheelbase to 1,438 mm. The MV Agusta Brutale 990R is clearly seeking more stability, a shift that specialized forums, where the MV Agusta Brutale 990R forum buzzes with passionate opinions, greet with a mix of relief and nostalgia. The inverted fork retains its 50 mm tubes but benefits from refined internal settings, while the rear shock receives the same treatment. A welcome surprise beneath the handlebars: a rotary steering damper makes its debut, discreet yet appreciated on a machine of this temperament. Braking stays faithful to the dual 310 mm discs gripped by four-piston radial calipers, with monoblock units reserved for the bigger 1090 R sibling.
On the mechanical side, the inline four-cylinder grows from 982 to 998 cc thanks to a bore reduced from 79 to 76 mm and a stroke lengthened from 50.1 to 55 mm. This longer-stroke architecture favors torque, which climbs to 106 Nm at 8,000 rpm. Power dips slightly to 139 hp at 10,600 rpm, an acceptable trade-off for more usable road performance. The electronics gain an eight-level traction control system and two engine maps. Reliability, the brand's historic Achilles' heel, benefits from a revised cooling circuit and a higher-capacity oil pump. At 190 kg dry, the machine remains a featherweight for a roadster of this displacement, compared to a Street Triple R that is admittedly lighter but significantly less powerful, or a Monster 1100 with a different character altogether.

With its seat perched at 830 mm, its 23-liter tank promising decent range, and its claimed top speed of 265 km/h, the MV Agusta Brutale 990R Anniversary and its 150th edition are aimed at experienced riders capable of appreciating mechanical nobility and accepting a price tag of €15,500. That's the cost of a motorcycle like no other, built for enthusiasts who want a roadster as beautiful standing still as it is incisive in motion. Purists may lament that this aristocrat is opening up to a wider audience. All the better for the rest of us.
