Overview

When MV Agusta decides to beef up a bike that already packed a serious punch, the result can only be explosive. The 2008 Brutale 989R picks up where the 910 R left off, pushing every parameter one notch further. The inline four-cylinder grows from 910 to 982 cc, gains a handful of horsepower to peak at 142 hp at 10,900 rpm, and delivers 101 Nm of torque from just 8,100 rpm. On paper, the improvement seems modest. On the road, it transforms the character of the beast.

MV Agusta Brutale 989R

What strikes you first is the fury contained within this engine with its 12.2:1 compression ratio. The 79 mm bore and ultra-short 50.1 mm stroke betray a powerplant designed to rev with a ferocity few nakeds can claim. The six-speed gearbox sends all that power to the rear wheel via chain drive — a classic but effective setup. A top speed of 265 km/h places this Brutale in the same waters as the Ducati Streetfighter or KTM Super Duke of the era, albeit with a very different temperament. Where the Duc plays the angry twin card and the Austrian opts for brute V-twin force, MV imposes the sophistication and linear rev-building of an Italian four-cylinder.

The chrome-molybdenum steel trellis frame combined with aluminum alloy elements keeps dry weight down to 185 kg — a remarkably contained figure for a roadster of this displacement. The inverted fork with adjustable preload, rebound, and compression up front, and the progressive monoshock equally adjustable at the rear: the range of settings rivals that of a full-blown sportbike. The 1,410 mm wheelbase, 805 mm seat height, and 135 mm ground clearance define a compact, agile geometry built for the rider who knows where to put their knees. Twin front discs and a single rear disc, shod with 120/70 and 190/55 ZR17 rubber, round out a cohesive package.

Then there's the question of price. At €15,490 in 2008, the Brutale 989R wasn't aimed at just any wallet. MV Agusta has always embraced its premium positioning, and this machine is no exception. You're paying for exclusivity, Italian craftsmanship, and an engine whose sound alone is worth the trip. The 19-liter tank provides decent range for mixed riding, even though nobody buys this bike to cross the country in one go. It's a pure pleasure machine, built for experienced riders who want a roadster capable of going toe-to-toe with the best sportbikes on twisty back roads, while retaining that noble streetfighter charisma that only the Varese manufacturer knows how to produce. A rare, demanding, and fiercely endearing motorcycle for those willing to play in this league.
