Overview
Who would have bet, in 2008, that the Monster recipe could still be refined? After a decade and a half of sculpting the naked roadster’s DNA, Ducati could have rested on its laurels. Yet, with this Monster S2R 1000, the Bologna-based brand achieved a remarkable feat: refining a myth without betraying its spirit, making it one of the most convincing value-for-money propositions in the range at the time, for less than €10,000 new.

Beneath its new look, borrowing the rear monobrach and raised lateral exhausts from the iconic S4R, it gains presence. But it’s under the 14-liter fuel tank that the real revolution takes place. The 992 cc Desmodromic V-twin, still air-cooled, has undergone a subtle but crucial metamorphosis. The raw figures – 95 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and a torque of 94 Nm – don't tell the whole story. Thanks to a reworked mapping, this engine, formerly known for being a bit rough, gains unprecedented smoothness. It becomes a much more civilized companion, distributing its generous torque from the mid-range without ever running out of breath, while still being able to scream to the redline. It is this versatility that makes it an exceptional engine, equally comfortable in the city as on mountain roads.
The chassis, with its famous steel trellis frame and fully adjustable 43 mm Showa inverted fork, is a predictable playground. With a dry weight announced at 178 kg and a seat height of 800 mm, the S2R 1000 inspires confidence. The equipment, with the standard Michelin Pilot Power tires, is serious for the price. It proves agile, leans with conviction, and transforms the V2’s power into a fluid and addictive progression. It is a motorcycle that encourages play, seeking out counter-steering, exploiting this power available at all engine speeds.
Who is it for? Clearly for the motorcyclist who seeks the raw character and iconic aesthetics of a Ducati Monster, but with a more relaxed everyday use than the more extreme S4R versions. It is a naked bike that excels in the role of a complete roadster, more so than the 1000 DS it replaced. Today, on the used market, the Ducati Monster S2R 1000 represents a golden opportunity to acquire an Italian motorcycle with authentic character. Its used price remains attractive, and its solid technical specifications make it a robust machine. Note that an A2 license restricted version exists, further broadening its audience.
The flaw? Perhaps a shadow cast too large by its siblings in the range. With its aggressive look, its tamed but still vibrant engine, and its well-placed price, the S2R 1000 2008 had everything to delight. It proved that you could be a Monster accessible without being a Monster cut-rate. A savory chapter in the history of this legendary roadster.
