Overview
Who still remembers the era when MV Agusta fielded nakeds capable of making superbikes tremble on their own turf? The Brutale 989R, 2009 vintage, perfectly embodies this all-or-nothing philosophy from Varese. Take the 910R, a machine already snappy enough to rip your arms off with every twist of the throttle, stuff its inline four-cylinder with a few extra cubic centimeters to reach 982 cc, and you get a 142-horsepower monster at 11,000 rpm. Six more horses than its predecessor, torque bumped to 96 Nm from just 8,000 rpm. On paper, the improvement seems modest. On the road, it changes everything.

The secret of this Italian machine doesn't lie solely in its horsepower. At 185 kg dry, the Brutale 989R remains a compact machine, tightly wrapped around its chrome-molybdenum steel and aluminum alloy trellis frame. The short 1,410 mm wheelbase gives it an agility that few competitors in this class can match. Against a Ducati Streetfighter or a KTM Super Duke, the MV plays a different card: surgical precision rather than raw brutality. The fully adjustable inverted fork—compression, rebound, and preload—paired with an equally adjustable progressive mono-shock, provides a working platform that demanding riders will appreciate. You can tell the engineers designed this bike to be ridden hard, not just shown off.
The braking deserves a closer look. Dual discs up front with four-piston calipers, a single disc at the rear with a caliper of the same caliber. The setup bites with conviction, without the harshness that characterizes some less refined Italians. The 120/70 and 190/55 tires on 17-inch rims offer an ideal compromise between grip and steering responsiveness. The seat, perched at 805 mm, remains accessible for an average build, and the 19-liter tank allows for decent rides between fuel stops. As for the claimed top speed of 265 km/h, it places this naked in territory where most of its rivals only venture in faired form.
Then there's the matter of price. At 15,490 euros in 2009, the Brutale 989R was clearly not aimed at the weekend rider. That's the price of Italian exclusivity, of an engine assembled with a level of care that mass-produced Japanese machines simply cannot offer. The 13:1 compression ratio, the bore and stroke dimensions of 79 x 50.1 mm betraying an oversquare engine built to chase high revs, the six-speed chain-driven transmission: every technical detail tells the same story—that of a stripped-down sportbike that refuses to sacrifice performance.
The Brutale 989R targets a very specific audience. Seasoned riders, capable of taming a peaky engine and a chassis that demands precision in return. It's not the ideal naked for beginners, nor the one you'd pick for devouring highway miles. It's an enthusiast's machine, sculpted for twisting roads and the occasional track day, with that extra dose of soul that only an MV Agusta can deliver. In 2009, it stood at the pinnacle of the Brutale range before the arrival of the 1078 engine. A rare mechanical interlude, and that's precisely what makes it desirable.
