Overview
Can a three-cylinder 798 cc engine still make a rider's heart race when Japanese and European contenders are lining up at the mid-size naked gate? MV Agusta bets it can with the Brutale 800 Rosso 2020, and the Varese manufacturer plays a shrewd card. Rather than designing a new model, it takes the proven Brutale 800 standard recipe, trims the price tag by simplifying the finish and color options, and lists it at 11,990 euros. Nearly 2,000 euros less than the RR and its 140 horsepower. The deal is straightforward: you lose 30 horsepower on paper, a touch of prestige in the details, but you keep the Italian character fully intact.

The inline three-cylinder produces 110 hp at 11,500 rpm and 83 Nm of torque at 7,600 rpm. Figures identical to the previous generation, calibrated during the Euro4 transition that required new camshafts, revised pistons, and a reworked exhaust system. The result is an engine less peaky than the RR's but significantly more generous in the midrange. Torque arrives early, stays full, and the Brutale 800 Rosso can be ridden without constantly chasing the redline. Top speed settles at 237 km/h, placing the machine in the same waters as a Street Triple RS or an MT-09, its two natural rivals. Against the Triumph, the MV counters with an extra dose of auditory and visual soul. Against the Yamaha, it claims a manufacturing exclusivity that the Japanese CP3 cannot match. The price of this Italian flair is fuel consumption of 5.6 l/100 km and a 16.5-liter tank that limits stints to roughly 280 kilometers before hitting reserve.
On the chassis side, the Brutale 800 Rosso retains its ALS steel trellis frame, a short 1,400 mm wheelbase, and a dry weight of 175 kg. The Marzocchi inverted fork offers preload, compression, and rebound adjustments, while the rear Sachs shock proves equally adjustable. Braking duties fall to Brembo four-piston calipers on twin floating discs, inspiring confidence, and the ABS can be switched off for those who want to express themselves on track. The seat perched at 830 mm and 135 mm of ground clearance confirm the machine's sporty calling. A test ride on the MV Agusta Brutale 800 Rosso reveals lively, precise handling, with a communicative front end that contrasts sharply with the more neutral filtering of its Japanese competitors. It's more direct, more nervous, sometimes less forgiving too.

The onboard electronics have sacrificed nothing to the price repositioning. Four engine maps including a customizable one, eight-level traction control, ride-by-wire, and a bidirectional EAS 2.0 quickshifter make up a package that many pricier nakeds struggle to match. The TFT dashboard, borrowed from the Rivale, does its job with clear readability, even though the absence of a fuel gauge remains an irritating oversight on a machine of this caliber. For A2 license holders, MV Agusta offers a restricted version, opening the brand's door to a younger audience drawn to the styling and willing to wait before unleashing all 110 horsepower.
The MV Agusta Brutale 800 Rosso 2020 invents nothing. It distills Varese's expertise into an accessible package without abandoning what makes an MV special: the raw snarl of the three-cylinder, the perceived quality of the chassis, the sculptural design that turns heads in a parking lot. Those searching for a used Brutale 800 Rosso will find 2021, 2022, and 2023 examples that are virtually identical on the technical front, proof that the formula found its balance. It's not the most powerful naked nor the best-equipped in its class, but it's the one that will most often have you walking back to the garage just to look at it.
