Overview
What sets an Italian naked apart from a well-bred Japanese one? Character. And on that front, the MV Agusta Brutale 800 R plays with guts as much as with engineering. Gone is the Rosso suffix, replaced by a simple "R" that sounds sharper, more assertive. Make no mistake: this 2023 evolution doesn't turn the machine into a track beast. It refines what already existed, layer after layer, with the stubbornness of a Varese craftsman who refuses to deliver a lukewarm product.

The 798 cc inline triple churns out 112 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 10,250 rpm. On paper, that's two horses more than the former Rosso. A trifle, the pony counters will say. Except the real work hides in the internals: redesigned valve guides, crankshaft and piston pin bearings optimized to reduce internal friction. The engine spins more freely, breathes better. The clutch bell has been revised, and the EAS 3.0 quickshifter benefits from a new sensor that smooths out gear changes, both up and down. The six-speed gearbox does its job without calling on the left hand. And the 13.3:1 compression ratio confirms this powerplant doesn't mess around with efficiency. Against a Triumph Street Triple RS or a Yamaha MT-09, the MV Agusta Brutale 800 R 2024 counters with a rougher, more vocal temperament, backed by that triple-exit exhaust note that nobody disputes.
On the chassis side, the tubular steel trellis frame receives modified side plates for added rigidity. The 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and Sachs rear shock benefit from a new linkage and revised settings. Braking remains serious business entrusted to Brembo: two 320 mm discs clamped by radial-mount four-piston calipers up front, a 220 mm disc with a two-piston caliper at the rear. The whole package rolls on 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 rubber with a 1,400 mm wheelbase and 135 mm of ground clearance. At 175 kg dry, the machine stays compact for a naked of this displacement. Wet weight naturally climbs with the 16.5-liter tank, but the MV retains an agility its rivals envy.

The electronics take a leap forward. The old LCD gives way to a 5.5-inch TFT display inherited from the Brutale 1000, smartphone-connected and capable of mirroring GPS navigation. An inertial measurement unit now governs the eight-level traction control, the switchable Continental ABS, and the four fuel maps including one fully customizable. Cruise control comes as standard. For a bike in this segment, the equipment list rivals machines priced considerably higher. The MV Agusta Brutale 800 R 2025 should logically follow this trajectory, Varese having laid solid foundations with this overhaul.
Then there's the question of price: €15,600. That's the entry point to the Brutale range, but it's far from an accessible fare for the average rider. The spec level, slightly below the RR and its 140 horsepower, partly explains the gap. Manufacturing processes have been streamlined, and the color choices are limited to red or black. But the chassis, electronics, and Italian charm remain intact. The bright spot: a restricted A2-compliant version opens the door to new license holders who dream of Italy without the wait. For anyone willing to pay the soul surcharge over a Japanese competitor, this Brutale remains a concentrated dose of character on a naked chassis. Not the most versatile, not the most comfortable on the highway with its 830 mm seat height, but probably the one that will make you smile most often through a string of corners.
