Overview

What drives a nearly century-old Italian manufacturer to revisit a recipe that has worked for decades? At Moto Guzzi, the answer comes down to three words: evolution without revolution. The 2018 Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone picks up the torch of a lineage born in the 1960s, but this third generation doesn't settle for a coat of black paint. Beneath its timeless appearance, it packs a seriously reworked engine and a dose of connectivity that nobody expected on this kind of bike.

Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone

The 744 cc V-twin stays true to the transverse architecture dear to Mandello del Lario, but it inherits the cylinder heads from the V9 engine. The result: 52 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 60 Nm of torque at 4,900 rpm. On the Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone spec sheet, the gains look modest. Five more horsepower than the V7 II isn't exactly a revolution. Yet the underlying work is real: new oil-cooled pistons, reinforced crankcase, revised crankshaft, modified clutch, and taller gear ratios in first and fifth. Guzzi pursued reliability and refinement rather than raw power. On the road, the twin pulses with that unmistakable mechanical signature, that lateral rocking at idle that brings a smile even after ten years of riding. You don't buy this motorcycle for lap times. You buy it for character.

On the chassis side, the ALS steel double-cradle frame has been reinforced at the front. The geometry gains a degree of agility with a steering head angle reduced to 26.4° and trail shortened by 11 mm. Wet weight climbs to 209 kg, which remains reasonable for a machine equipped with shaft drive—unique in this displacement segment. The seat height of 770 mm inspires immediate confidence, even for shorter riders. The Brembo four-piston front calipers do their job properly, backed by standard ABS. The 40 mm fork and rear shock absorbers with adjustable preload fulfill their role without any sporting pretension. Against a Triumph Street Twin or a Kawasaki W800, the V7 III Stone plays a different card: less polished, rougher, more authentic in its responses.

The Stone version stands out through its deliberate minimalism. No tachometer on the dashboard, fully blacked-out exhaust, minimalist aesthetics. It's the most affordable in the V7 III range, with a 2018 price tag of 8,549 euros that positioned it against the Japanese contenders in the neo-retro segment. The Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone Night Pack, available from 2019, added an extra touch of darkness for enthusiasts. As an option, the MG-MP multimedia platform connects the bike to a smartphone: real-time riding data, parking geolocation, route tracking, and customizable alerts. A two-level traction control rounds out the electronic package, switchable off for those who prefer to manage the throttle on their own. The Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone accessories catalog allows riders to customize the machine to their liking, from a flyscreen to a luggage rack.

This Italian addresses riders looking for a cruising companion rather than a performance tool. Accessible with an A2 license when restricted, it also appeals to experienced riders seeking simplicity. The 21-liter tank provides decent range for weekend rides. Those looking for a used Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone will find an active market, as engine reliability was significantly improved on this generation. The V7 III Stone is neither a disguised sportbike nor a lazy cruiser. It's an honest motorcycle, mechanical at heart, a reminder that riding pleasure doesn't require pushing beyond the limits of reason.
