Overview

Who remembers a time when supermoto was still a fringe genre, reserved for dirt riders who'd switched to tarmac? In 2009, KTM decided to shatter that tame image with the KTM 990 Supermoto R, a radicalized version of an already sharp machine. On paper, the recipe seems simple: take the 990 SM, graft on more focused components, and shed some weight. In practice, the result is a near-liter-class supermoto that clearly plays in sportbike territory.

KTM 990 Supermoto R

Beneath the 15-liter tank, the 999 cc V-twin pumps out 115 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and delivers 97 Nm of torque from 7,000 rpm. This four-valve-per-cylinder twin, with its generous 101 mm bore and short 62.4 mm stroke, favors snappy rev-building over low-end grunt. It's a deliberate choice. Where a Ducati Hypermotard 1100 banks on the character and smoothness of its Italian twin, the KTM prefers aggression and mid-range availability. The six-speed chain-driven gearbox transmits the power unfiltered. Every twist of the throttle translates into sharp, almost brutal acceleration. One would like to know the top speed of the KTM 990 Supermoto R, but the manufacturer doesn't disclose it. No matter: this isn't a machine built for long straights.

The chromoly tubular trellis frame, paired with an aluminum subframe, forms the backbone of the beast. At 189 kg dry, the R sheds a few precious kilos compared to the standard SM. This weight loss is immediately felt in direction changes. The 1,510 mm wheelbase remains compact, the 195 mm ground clearance allows for generous lean angles, and the 48 mm WP inverted fork along with the WP monoshock deliver serious damping, calibrated for committed riding. This is a far cry from comfort-oriented suspension for Sunday cruising.

The braking setup deserves a closer look. Twin discs up front with radially mounted four-piston Brembo calipers, a single disc at the rear with a floating two-piston Brembo caliper. Initial bite is strong, modulation is precise. Against an Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 or a Husqvarna 610 SM, the KTM holds a clear advantage in braking power, consistent with its 115 horsepower. The 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires complete a package oriented toward on-road performance, with no compromise toward off-road use.

Then there's the question of comfort and price. With a seat perched at 875 mm and a tank of only 15 liters, the 990 Supermoto R makes no concessions for long-distance riding. It's aimed at experienced riders, lovers of twisty roads and track days, who seek the thrills of a powerful supermoto without the constraints of a faired sportbike. At €13,170 in 2009, the price tag was steep but justified by the quality of the components. This KTM remains a niche machine, demanding, reserved for those who know exactly what they want to do with a fierce twin planted on 17-inch wheels.
