Overview

Who would want to shell out €20,899 for an adventure bike you can't even order at your dealer? Riders who know exactly what they're looking for. The 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally is not a catalog motorcycle. It's a limited-production obstacle-clearing weapon, 700 units worldwide, available for reservation online only. An elitist positioning reminiscent of Ducati or BMW special editions, except here the playground isn't tarmac but African trails.

KTM 890 Adventure R Rally

The 889 cc four-stroke twin develops 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 100 Nm of torque from 6,500 rpm. Figures identical to the standard 890 Adventure R, which makes sense since it's the same engine, bored out in displacement compared to the former 790. The real difference between the KTM 890 Adventure R Rally and its R cousin lies in its WP suspension. Out with the conventional components. In with a WP XPLOR PRO 7548 fork featuring Cone Valve technology and a WP XPLOR PRO 6746 shock with the progressive PDS system. The result is measurable: 270 mm of travel, 30 mm more than the R. That extra stroke offers nearly infinite adjustment possibilities for anyone who knows how to turn a clicker. By comparison, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 Rally Edition looks underwhelming with its far less sophisticated components. Only the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports can claim to play in the same league, but with an extra 40 kg on the scales.

Because the KTM 890 Adventure R Rally's weight remains contained. At 196 kg dry, this Austrian sits among the lightest long-distance adventure bikes on the market. The chrome-molybdenum steel frame, which uses the engine as a stressed member, contributes to this restraint. Add an Akrapovic silencer 35% lighter than the stock exhaust and a standard bidirectional quickshifter, and you get a machine built to devour miles of trail without wearing out its rider. The 303 mm ground clearance lets you tackle obstacles a road bike wouldn't even dare look at. The direct trade-off: the seat peaks at 910 mm. Riders under five foot eleven will have to deal with this reality when putting a foot down.

The chassis rolls on D.I.D DirtStar rims fitted with Metzeler Karoo 3 tires, a dual-purpose rubber that favors off-road without being embarrassing on pavement. The 90/90-21 front and 150/70-18 rear dimensions confirm the off-road calling. Braking duties fall to radial-mount four-piston calipers up front and a floating two-piston caliper at the rear, all governed by an off-road disengageable cornering ABS, and the setup delivers. The electronics package includes three riding modes, traction control, adjustable engine braking, and a Rally-specific mode with nine levels of traction control adjustment via the Tech Pack. Riding in demanding conditions gains precision thanks to this fine-tuning. Everything is managed through the five-inch TFT display.

A telling detail about the model's philosophy: the passenger footpegs have simply been removed. The KTM 890 Adventure R Rally doesn't bother with compromises. It targets the solo, experienced rider — the one looking for an adventure bike capable of going the distance on an amateur rally-raid or a Moroccan crossing. With its 20-liter tank and a claimed consumption of 4.5 liters per hundred kilometers, range sits around 440 km. Enough to space out fuel stops. If you're hunting for one on the used market, patience will be required given the limited production numbers. The 2022, 2023, and up through the 2024 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally continued on the same platform with minor cosmetic updates. The price remains steep, and the conversion kit to turn an R into a Rally even more so. But for anyone who has tasted the precision of those WP suspensions on a rutted track, going back to the standard version has a taste of compromise.
