Overview
Take a compact little trail bike, bolt on wire-spoked wheels, and see what happens. That's exactly KTM's logic with this SW variant of the 390 Adventure, a machine that has been playing both sides of the fence for a few seasons now. The exercise isn't new to the industry, but it deserves serious attention, especially when targeting a segment as hotly contested as accessible adventure bikes.

On paper, the 373 cc single-cylinder produces 43 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 37 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. It's no thunderbolt, but at 175 kilograms fully fueled, the power-to-weight ratio remains coherent for mixed road-trail use. The seat height, perched at 830 mm, naturally selects its audience: shorter riders will have to make their peace with that. In return, the 200 mm ground clearance and fully adjustable WP Apex suspension — compression, rebound and preload on the 43 mm inverted fork, preload and rebound on the rear monoshock — lend genuine technical credibility to the package. That level of equipment was reserved, just a few years ago, for machines well above this displacement class.
The nominal difference between the standard 390 Adventure and the SW comes down to two letters and spoked wheels. On the trail, the advantage is real: a spoked wheel absorbs hard impacts better and is easier to repair in the field than a cast rim. But KTM didn't change the tires. The TKC 70s in 110/90-17 and 150/60-17 remain reasonable road-dirt compromises — not truly aggressive off-road, nor particularly capable on wet tarmac. For serious off-road use, fitting more appropriate rubber straight from the dealership will be necessary.
The price stings, and it's fair to say so. Listed at around €7,950, the KTM 390 Adventure SW 2023 finds itself in an uncomfortable position. For what the KTM 390 Adventure SW 2024 costs in France, the answer hovers around the same base figures, with slight variations depending on options. Up against a Yamaha Ténéré 700 or a well-equipped Honda CB500X, the displacement argument becomes hard to defend to a rational buyer. Except that this KTM comes with a 5-inch TFT screen, traction control, cornering ABS, two riding modes, a slipper clutch, and a small windscreen adjustable in two positions. That's an impressive list for a 400, and it justifies part of the price gap.
The KTM 390 Adventure SW 2024 targets a very specific profile: the urban or peri-urban rider who dreams of weekend runs on gravel roads without committing to a full-size adventure bike. It also suits the young A2 licence holder looking for a versatile machine without the intimidating bulk. It's no Husqvarna 401, nor a Beta in road-bike clothing, and selling it as such would be a mistake. But for connecting the city to forest tracks with a 14.5-liter tank and a claimed consumption of 3.37 liters per hundred kilometers, it ticks the boxes for daily use with genuine efficiency. The perfect motorcycle doesn't exist; the one that best matches your specific needs, however, sometimes does.
