Overview
When KTM decides to start from scratch on an already dominant machine, one might wonder if it's overkill. With the 2016 KTM 250 SX-F, the answer comes down to one figure: 98.5 kg dry, electric starter included. Yamaha, Honda, and Husqvarna can put away their calculators, because nobody in the 250 four-stroke class goes that low. This isn't a marketing talking point — it's the result of meticulous work carried out part by part, gram by gram, with a relentlessness that commands respect.

The 249.9 cc single-cylinder engine is the centerpiece of this redesign. With a bore of 78 mm and a stroke of 52.3 mm, the geometry remains typically over-square, built for high revs. The compression ratio climbs to 14.4:1, the four titanium valves open generously, and the whole package revs confidently up to 14,000 rpm. The connecting rod shortened by 6 mm, the stiffer crankshaft, and the reduced reciprocating mass all translate into an engine with an almost aggressive responsiveness. KTM claims a 1.1 kg reduction on the engine alone compared to the previous generation — a remarkable achievement when you consider that the Mitsuba electric starter is still standard equipment, while Japanese competitors still force their riders to kick-start. In competition, that detail can change the outcome of a moto.
The WP AER 48 mm fork deserves a closer look. The air spring principle with separate functions between the two legs, 300 mm of travel, and a 1.4 kg saving over the old hydraulic cartridge represent a genuine generational leap. Adjustment is done with an air pump, which can throw off a rider used to turning screwdrivers in their suspension. In return, sensitivity to small irregularities is markedly improved, and the progressivity at the end of the stroke will appeal to the weekend club rider and the competitor chasing a regional podium alike. The 25CrMo4 steel frame, recalibrated to deliver 20% more torsional rigidity and 30% more longitudinal flex, forms a coherent package with this suspension that absorbs impacts without transmitting fatigue. For a used KTM 250 SX-F sought out by a club rider, it's precisely this kind of balance that makes the difference after forty minutes of racing.
The Keihin injection system with its 44 mm throttle body, the two mappings selectable from the handlebar, the lowered rear seat section to ease weight transfers, the "zero mud" footpeg design that no longer clogs in deep ruts — all of this tells the story of a machine conceived by people who ride and who understand what it means to lose a position because a shift lever seized up. The Excel rims, the Dunlop Geomax MX32 tires developed with the factory American team, and the Brembo brakes with GALFER discs saving 63 g at the front round out a premium equipment package sold at €8,750 — a price that positions the KTM 250 SX-F clearly above a Kawasaki KX250F or a Suzuki RMZ 250, but with a level of finish and technology that justifies the gap.
This 250 SX-F is aimed first and foremost at riders who want to win, whether they're committed amateurs or up-and-coming professionals. The 960 mm seat height and the sharp-tempered engine do not make it a beginner's motocross bike. On the other hand, for anyone searching for a used KTM 250 SX-F among the 2016–2023 model years, the foundations laid on this vintage have stood the test of time without aging in their fundamentals, each successive update having simply polished an already well-cut diamond. The KTM 250 SX-F Factory Edition offered on certain later model years merely pushed that dial a little further into the details. But the foundation was already there in 2016.
