Overview
When KTM decides to spice up its already explosive recipe even further, the result is the KTM 1290 Super Duke R Special Edition 2016, a version that transforms an already difficult-to-tame motorcycle into an even more unapologetic object of desire. The LC8 V-twin of 1301 cc, inherited from the RC8-R sportbike, hasn't changed in character: 173 horsepower at 8870 rpm and 144.2 Nm of torque housed in a chrome-molybdenum steel trellis frame at 187.5 kg dry. On paper, the numbers command respect. On the road, they command concentration.

What sets this special edition apart from the standard versions is, first and foremost, a color. The "Galvano Orange" overflows the frame to colonize the wheels and bodywork, transforming the motorcycle into a visual statement as much as a speed tool. The titanium Akrapovic fitted as standard doesn't just display a beautiful Slovenian silencer: it sheds 1.5 kg from a machine that didn't strictly need it, and delivers a sound that stock exhausts simply cannot replicate. The anodized aluminum fork clamps replace the standard parts with a measurable gain in rigidity, the wave discs stabilize an already formidable 4-piston Brembo braking system on 320 mm rotors, and the seat raised by 2 mm to 837 mm gains in support with contrast stitching and reinforced upholstery.
Against a Ducati Streetfighter V4 or a BMW M 1000 R, the KTM plays a different card: that of a roadster that fully embraces its brutality without concealing it behind sophisticated bodywork. The electronics are there, very much present, with lean-angle-sensitive traction control, a disconnectable sport ABS, and three riding modes that allow access to the 173 horsepower to be modulated according to the rider's mood and road conditions. The slipper clutch rounds out the package for riders who want to attack braking zones without risking rear wheel lockup. This is not a motorcycle for beginners, but it's not a machine reserved for professional track riders either.
The 5 mm carbon engine covers included in the PowerParts package reveal the true intention of this edition: it is designed for those who want to head to the circuit without modifying their machine. At €15,995, the KTM 1290 Super Duke R Special Edition 2016 positions its price below the €16,000 mark, which remains consistent with the content on offer. The folding levers with bar-end weights, the anodized reservoir caps, the adjustable 48 mm WP upside-down fork with 125 mm of travel: every detail reflects a level of assembly care not systematically found in the standard versions of its direct competitors.
The target audience will recognize itself easily: an experienced rider, likely with a sportbike background, seeking the thrill of a maxi-displacement machine without sacrificing the practicality of a roadster and the range offered by the 18-liter tank. The announced top speed of 280 km/h places the machine in a class of its own for a production roadster. What KTM achieved with this special edition is taking a motorcycle already at the top of its category and grafting on enough substance to justify its existence without falling into a cosmetic exercise. The orange bites — and not just the eyes.
