Overview
The Adventure has always been complemented by a more off-road focused version. This is even more the case with the 1190. The Katoche trail clearly displays ambitions that are more road-oriented than before, and the R proudly takes up the off-road torch – a domain where the Austrian has always outperformed the competition.
You may have noticed that the 1190 Adventure is more charming than the 990 it replaces. More "silky," less like a rolling toolbox, it also benefits from the twin-cylinder engine from the hypersport RC8-R. Tightly wound muscle for a high-velocity trail bike. With 150 horsepower in the pistons, the engine boasts a 35-unit increase. Violent! And an increase in displacement is good for torque. From 10 Nm, we go to 12.7. Perfect for forgetting the weight gain (+10 kg) caused by the evolution.
The most spectacular distinguishing feature to differentiate the two versions of the Adventure are the prominent lateral frame reinforcements. A sign: the beauty wants trail, wants to protect itself from ruts and rocks, to face rough terrain. Its tires authorize it for this type of excursion but are not a passport for it. Choosing the R is leaning towards this adventurous spirit, and the particularities of this version are numerous and eloquent: monobloc seat, larger and thinner wheels (90-90/21 and 150-70/18), 30 mm more suspension travel, smaller windscreen, wider handlebars, tire pressure controller fitted as standard, higher and non-adjustable seat, shorter rake from 120 to 108 mm and longer wheelbase increased by 20 mm.
The 2013 technological innovation, electronic suspension, will not be available on the R but offered as an option on the standard model. Katoche prefers to let the rider handle adjustments themselves and as they see fit. At their disposal, an inverted 48 mm fork and a fully adjustable WP shock absorber – In 2015, the suspension offers greater reserve for committed off-road riding. This does not mean that the Adventure is neglected in terms of assistance. Silicon and digital signals allow for the installation of a ride-by-wire throttle, 4-mode traction control (Sport, Street, Rain, Offroad) and 3-level ABS (Bosch 9ME). On the "mechanical" side, we note the presence of an anti-dribble clutch and a steering damper.
In 2014, the Adventure gains a new asset in its electronic package: MSC stability control. This system regulates the ABS force based on the lean angle. Working in concert with the MTC anti-slip system, it brings a new dimension to active safety:
- MSC prevents wheel slippage when braking on the lean,- it reduces the righting moment when braking on the lean,- it prevents tipping over on the front when braking in an emergency,- it prevents rear wheel spin when accelerating on the lean,- it prohibits front wheel lift during acceleration.
By requesting an update from your KTM dealer, it can be introduced on the first 1190 Adventure, those of 2013.
Whether standard or R, the 1190 Adventure offers some appreciable amenities: a generous 23-liter tank, a maintenance interval extended to 15,000 kms, adjustable handlebars and footrests, braking equipment worthy of a sportbike, watts galore... and the indispensable little plus of the R versions: the orange frame. A machine obviously intended for a selective and experienced clientele. Since 2015, the seat has been fitted with new, more durable foam, although its appearance is softer.
