Overview
Lime green with white stripes, a head fairing bubble, and a chrome hump seat: even before turning the key, the Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe sets the scene. The scene of the 1970s, when Akashi’s four-cylinder engines shook the competition on the circuits and in people’s minds. This is not cheap nostalgia. It’s a statement of intent.

Kawasaki had already laid its cards with the standard Z900RS, a direct tribute to the legendary 900 Z1. With this Cafe version, the brand pushes the cursor towards the world of café racers, machines designed for sprints from shop to shop. The clip-on handlebars bring the rider back to a more forward, more tense posture, without sacrificing the back on the altar of style. This is the usual successful neo-retro balancing act: giving the attitude without imposing suffering. On this point, the Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe racer test reveals a machine that is much more civilized than it appears.
Under the worked bodywork, the mechanics are those of the Z900RS: an inline four-cylinder engine of 948 cc developing 111 horsepower at 8500 rpm and 98.5 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. Serious figures, supported by a tubular trellis frame and an adjustable inverted fork in compression and rebound. For 215 kg fully fueled, the Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe 2020 offers a power-to-weight ratio that allows it to reach 220 km/h without straining, while consuming reasonably around 5.3 liters per 100. The 17-liter tank ensures correct range for Sunday rides that go on and on.

The main drawback comes from the rims. In this neo-retro segment, spokes are almost a religion. The Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe racer 2020 renounces them, as does the standard version, in favor of cast wheels attempting to imitate the thing. The illusion only works halfway. It’s a shame, because the rest of the build holds up: the brushed finish of the exhaust, the dual-dial instrument cluster framing a digital display, and this overall silhouette that bears the genetic imprint of the Z1 without being a copy-paste.

At 12,599 euros, the Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe 2020 positions itself below a BMW NineT Racer or a Triumph Thruxton R, while playing in the same aesthetic court. The entry ticket remains high for a machine whose natural playground is the weekend road rather than the circuit. It is aimed at an experienced rider, sensitive to design, who wants an object with a strong identity without giving up daily comfort. For this profile, it ticks almost all the boxes, and the Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe accessory catalog available since its launch allows you to go even further in personalization. A solid base for those who want to sign their mount.
