Overview
We often talk about "middleweights" as the ideal compromise. But how far can you stretch the definition before tipping into something else? With its 948 cc, the 2018 Kawasaki Z900 Performance clearly plays on the edge. It’s no longer strictly a middleweight, not quite a hyper-naked. That's where its appeal, and its trap, lie.

Its 128 horsepower engine is a true chameleon. At low RPM, it’s docile, almost placid, to swallow the city without fuss. But let it climb to 7700 rpm where its 100 Nm of torque is released, and the character changes completely. The power explodes linearly, without treacherous jolts, propelling the 207 kg fully fueled with an authority that still surprises. 0 to 62 mph? It’s dispatched in a blink of an eye, a demonstration of pure efficiency. Faced with a Yamaha MT-09, more nervous and wild, or a Triumph Street Triple, more precise and refined, the Z900 Performance focuses on muscularity and progressiveness. It’s a machine that reassures before it excites.
The Performance pack is more than just trim. The tinted windscreen is a blessing on national roads, the seat cowl refines the line, and the tank protector avoids unpleasant surprises. But the centerpiece is the Akrapovic. It’s not just about the sound, even if the sound gains depth and character. No, the interest is mechanical: less than 2.8 kilos on the scale, a small gain of 3.5 horsepower and 2 Nm of torque. Figures that, added to the pleasant sound, justify the extra cost for those who really want to personalize their machine. Without this kit, the Z900 remains an excellent base, but it loses a part of its "special" soul.
At a price approaching 10249 euros at the time, the question "what is the price of the Kawasaki Z900 Performance?" was already being asked. Today, browsing classified ads for a used Kawasaki Z900 Performance, you can find interesting deals. It’s a motorcycle that ages well, especially in its more recent versions like the Kawasaki Z900 Performance 2021 or even the 2024 and 2025 models whose new price has naturally increased. For a lower budget, the 2017 version remains a serious joker. Its audience? The rider who has surpassed the stage of the first large displacement bike and who is looking for a versatile naked, capable of daily commutes without suffering and sporty weekend rides without complex. It will never be the ultimate weapon on the track, its 41 mm inverted fork and single shock lacking a bit of fine adjustment, but on the open road, it is of formidable efficiency.
Ultimately, this Z900 Performance is an honest and charming proposition. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre, but it interprets it with quiet strength and meaningful equipment. It’s the bike for those who want substance without ostentation, performance without hysteria. A good fork stroke, a good dosage, a true character. Kawasaki has rarely been so spot on in the muscular naked segment.
