Overview
Who said you need to ride fast to have fun? The 2007 Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer proves the opposite with every mile swallowed. This chrome-laden liner, built for long two-up journeys, doesn't play in the same league as twitchy roadsters or razor-sharp sportbikes. Its playground is the open highway unspooling its ribbon of asphalt, the mountain pass taken without rush, the back road where you savor the scenery rather than the needle on the speedometer. At 375 kg wet and with its stretched-out silhouette, it commands respect at first glance.

Beneath that classic bodywork beats a 1552 cc V-twin delivering 67 horsepower at 4,700 rpm. On paper, that's modest. On the road, it's a different story entirely. The 124.5 Nm of torque available from just 2,700 rpm turns every roll-on into a firm, sustained surge, without the rider ever needing to flirt with the redline. This four-valve-per-cylinder twin, shaft-driven and mated to a five-speed gearbox, favors flexibility over raw performance. You crack the throttle open, and the engine responds with a smoothness that perfectly matches the model's philosophy. Top speed caps out at 160 km/h, and frankly, nobody buys this machine to chase lap times on the motorway.
The standard equipment positions this Tourer version as the true long-distance traveler of the VN range, well above the stripped-down Classic or the sportier Mean Streak. A generous windshield, rigid saddlebags, sissy bar, and passenger grab handles are all part of the package. The low 705 mm seat height reassures shorter riders, and the passenger inherits a properly sized rear perch with well-positioned footpegs. The 20-liter tank remains the weak point for long hauls; expect frequent fuel stops if you're racking up the miles. Against a Yamaha XV1700 Road Star or a Honda VTX1800 Tourer, the Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer holds its own on comfort but gives ground on range.
The steel double-cradle frame houses a 43 mm telescopic fork up front and two air-assisted rear shocks, adjustable for rebound across four positions. Braking relies on dual 300 mm front discs squeezed by twin-piston calipers, backed by a single 300 mm rear disc. The setup demands a firm hand and, above all, the habit of using the rear brake to stabilize the mass under deceleration. The 150/80-16 and 170/70-16 tires offer a good compromise between grip and longevity, but the limited ground clearance rules out any aggressive cornering ambitions. The footpegs scrape tarmac as soon as the lean angle exceeds what's reasonable. That's not a flaw — it's a reminder for anyone who forgets they're riding a cruiser, not an adventure bike.
Priced at 15,299 euros in 2007, the Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer was aimed at easygoing tourers, at couples who prioritize the journey over the riding, at those who want to ride long distances without fatigue and arrive relaxed. It shines neither for its lightness, nor its agility, nor its braking. It shines for its ability to turn every outing into a peaceful ride, carried by generous torque and a seat comfort that forgives long hours in the saddle. If you're looking for a machine to devour corners, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a 1,552 cc rolling armchair to cruise across France without ever raising your voice, it deserves your attention.
