An ambitious bet for a machine weighing 375 kg wet, powered by a torque-laden 1552 cc V-twin.

This four-stroke V-twin develops 67 horsepower at 4,700 rpm, which won't make anyone tremble on paper. But the real trump card lies further down in the rev range: 124.5 Nm of torque available from just 2,700 rpm. This is the kind of engine that pulls effortlessly on a whiff of throttle, in fifth gear, at 90 km/h, with the revs barely above idle. The shaft drive, paired with a five-speed gearbox, perfectly suits this vocation as a relaxed tourer. Forget the greasy chain and tension adjustments — just twist the grip and watch the scenery roll by.
The standard equipment sets this Tourer apart from the base VN Classic. A generous windshield, rigid saddlebags, a passenger sissy bar, and grab handles form a travel-ready package without ever cracking open the accessories catalog. The seat, set at just 705 mm, reassures shorter riders and lets you plant both feet flat on the ground without hesitation. The passenger inherits a decent rear perch, firmly supported against the backrest. For two-up riding, that's a serious advantage over a Yamaha XV1700 Road Star Silverado, which demanded a hefty accessories budget to reach this level of comfort.
Make no mistake about the temperament of this Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer. Its 375 kg command respect in every corner. Ground clearance, limited by the forward-set footpegs and the bulk of the steel double-cradle frame, rules out any sporting ambitions. The pegs scrape quickly, and the lean angle amounts to whatever the geometry of a cruiser deigns to offer. The braking also deserves an honest word. Two 300 mm discs up front, one at the rear, all clamped by two-piston calipers. Adequate in dry conditions, but when loaded with a passenger and luggage, you'd better anticipate seriously and use the rear brake to stabilize deceleration. The 43 mm fork and twin rear shocks soak up road imperfections without drama, provided you don't mistake cruising pace for an aggressive charge down a back road.
At 15,299 euros in 2005, the VN1600 Tourer sat in the upper bracket of the segment, facing competitors better equipped with electronics or lighter in weight. Its 20-liter tank also limited range — ironic for a machine that invites you to ride far. But this Kawasaki targeted a specific audience: long-distance touring enthusiasts, riding couples who value shared comfort over performance, those who want a reliable Japanese alternative to American twins without giving up classic styling. For that brief, the big Japanese V-twin fulfilled its contract with a mechanical honesty that commands respect. Not the most agile, not the best-braked, but a sincere custom tourer that knew how to reward those willing to ride at its own pace.
