Overview
When the displacement war heats up in the custom world, Kawasaki never stays on the sidelines for long. With the VN 1600 Classic, on sale from 2004 and still in the lineup in 2007, the Akashi firm answers the escalation launched by Honda and its monstrous VTX 1800 or the Yamaha Road Star Warrior. The message is clear: more displacement, more presence, more metal. And on that last point, the Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic delivers. At 338 kg wet, this Japanese machine doesn't cheat. No plastic fairings here to hide the goods. Chrome and steel are everywhere, from the double-cradle tubular frame to the engine cases, and you feel every bit of it during low-speed maneuvers at a standstill.

Beneath this classic bodywork that reveals nothing of the chassis modifications — lengthened and lowered compared to the VN 1500 — beats a 1,552 cc V-twin. With 67 horsepower delivered at 4,700 rpm and above all 127.5 Nm of torque available from just 2,700 rpm, the twin gets the job done. It hauls this mass without flinching, with an almost disconcerting ease. The problem is precisely that ease — too smooth. The engine proves monotonously linear, and the stock mufflers rob it of any voice. For a machine of this size, you'd expect a deep rumble, a sound signature that gives you goosebumps. Instead, you get a polite, well-mannered whisper. Those craving mechanical thrills will be left wanting.
On the road, the 2007 Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer demands a delicate touch. With a seat perched at just 680 mm, your feet reach the ground effortlessly, which is reassuring in parking lots. But the limited ground clearance calls for caution in tighter bends. The two rear shock absorbers, with their travel limited to 95 mm, cope poorly with road imperfections, and the frame doesn't show enough rigidity to compensate. Add the considerable inertia of 307 kg dry weight thrown into a curve, and you'll understand that this machine demands smooth, flowing riding with no abrupt inputs. The braking, handled by two 300 mm discs up front and one at the rear with two-piston calipers, does the bare minimum to slow the beast down. Adequate, nothing more.
It's ultimately on long national roads and quiet back roads that the VN 1600 Classic finds its rhythm. The riding position, arms spread wide and feet forward, feels just right. The 20-liter tank allows decent range between stops, and the five-speed gearbox paired with shaft drive delivers hassle-free operation. Two-up, the passenger seat and footboards allow comfortable rides at a moderate pace. For anyone looking at a used Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer, this is worth noting: this bike ages well mechanically, provided you respect its placid nature.
At a price tag of 12,599 euros new at the time, the VN 1600 Classic was positioned against rivals that sometimes offered more character for a comparable budget. Its trump card is build quality — that impression of raw solidity that appeals to fans of heavy, authentic customs. But don't ask it to be what it's not: neither a disguised sportbike nor a tourer capable of devouring the highway at full throttle, despite its 180 km/h top speed. The VN 1600 Classic is aimed at patient riders, those who prefer the journey over the stopwatch, who find their pleasure in the simple mechanics of riding, without showmanship. A Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer test ride is all it takes to understand its philosophy: ride easy, ride long.
