Overview
When the cubic centimeter race was in full swing in the mid-2000s, Kawasaki couldn't just sit on the sidelines. Facing the Honda VTX 1800 and the Yamaha Road Star Warrior, the Akashi manufacturer decided to beef up its heavyweight cruiser by breaking through the 1,500 cc barrier. The result: the Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic, a metal battleship powered by a 1,552 cc V-twin, available from 2004 and still in the lineup in 2005 for 12,599 euros. On paper, the spec sheet has plenty to attract fans of big, laid-back displacement.

The twin produces 67 horsepower at 4,700 rpm and, more importantly, 127.5 Nm of torque from just 2,700 rpm. More than enough to effortlessly haul the beast's 338 kg wet weight, transmitted to the wheels through a shaft drive and a five-speed gearbox. On the road, the engine does its job with an almost too well-mannered consistency. It pulls hard, it pulls long, but it does so in a silence that cruiser purists will find frustrating. The mufflers muzzle the V-twin to the point of stripping it of any sonic personality. We're a long way from the raw rumble you'd expect from a machine of this size. The 2005 Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer proves docile, almost too polite, like a boxer who refuses to raise his voice.
On the chassis side, the steel double-cradle frame houses a 43 mm telescopic fork with 150 mm of travel up front and twin shocks offering only 95 mm at the rear. This imbalance is noticeable: while the front end filters bumps adequately, the rear lacks suppleness on rough roads. The limited ground clearance and the seat set at just 680 mm above the tarmac set the scene. You ride with your feet nearly flat on the ground, footpegs pushed forward, in a quintessentially cruiser posture. Comfortable, yes. But as soon as the pace picks up or the road starts to wind, the 338 kg make their presence felt with considerable inertia. Braking, handled by two 300 mm discs up front and one at the rear, does the bare minimum without ever fully inspiring confidence under hard braking. If you're looking for a used Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer, check the condition of the pads and discs: with that kind of weight, they work hard.
So, who is this big Kawa meant for? Certainly not the rider in a hurry or the one dreaming of thrills through a string of curves. The VN 1600 Classic is built for cruising, Sunday rides, and long straight roads swallowed at 130 km/h in supreme comfort. Two-up, the natural riding position and generous seat allow you to ride for hours without pain. The 20-liter tank provides decent range without being exceptional for touring use. Those interested in the Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer, whether the 2006 or 2007 model year, will find the same philosophy: a machine built to last, with little plastic and plenty of metal. It's solid, it's heavy, it's honest.
The VN 1600 Classic doesn't try to impress you. It won't pin you against the backrest, and it won't sing through the rev range. But it will take you far, without complaint, with the reliability of a shaft drive and the ruggedness of an engine designed to soak up the miles. For a Kawasaki VN 1600 Classic Tourer test ride, you have to accept the deal: trade adrenaline for serenity. Patient road riders and fans of authentic cruisers will find a lovable mount here, as long as they never ask it to give what it has no desire to deliver.
