Overview

Who hasn't dreamed of taming 200 horsepower on a back road without needing test-pilot reflexes? That's the promise Kawasaki puts on the table with the 2018 ZX-10R SE. The recipe is well known: an inline four-cylinder displacing 998 cc that delivers 200 hp at 13,000 rpm and 113.8 Nm of torque at 11,500 rpm, all housed in a perimeter twin-spar aluminum frame. So far, nothing new compared to the standard ZX-10R. The real difference lies in the running gear. Kawasaki entrusted Showa with the development of KECS, its first semi-active suspension system. A 43 mm inverted fork and a rear monoshock bristling with sensors that continuously analyze travel, compression, and the machine's dynamics. The solenoid valves' response time drops to one millisecond, thanks to a single-stage direct-drive architecture. That's ten times faster than the blink of an eye. In practical terms, the bike adjusts its damping before the rider even notices a road imperfection.

Three modes are available to match the riding situation at hand. Road mode softens the suspension response to soak up pavement imperfections. Track mode stiffens everything for added precision and stability on circuit. Manual mode lets the rider choose from 15 levels of compression and rebound, with the electronics then fine-tuning in real time. For a touring rider who links motorway miles in the morning with twisty mountain passes in the afternoon, this system is a game-changer. No more pulling out Allen keys on the roadside; a single button does the job.

The SE doesn't stop at smart suspension. It borrows the ZX-10RR's Marchesini forged aluminum wheels, which are lighter, and its bidirectional quickshifter that allows clutchless upshifts and downshifts through the six-speed gearbox. On the scales, these additions bring the wet weight to 208 kg, barely two kilos more than the standard version. A weight penalty that's invisible on the move. As for looks, the black and grey livery remains understated, almost shy for a machine capable of reaching 300 km/h. Only a few touches of Kawasaki green and an SE badge on the 17-litre tank give away the premium version.

Braking relies on twin 330 mm discs clamped by four-piston radial-mount calipers up front, backed by a 220 mm disc at the rear. The seat height, set at 835 mm, stays within the hypersport segment norm. The full electronics package—traction control, wheel-slip control, engine-brake management, launch control, and an inertial measurement unit—supports the rider where mechanics alone no longer suffice. It's a discreet but ever-present safety net that lets you exploit the engine without every twist of the throttle becoming a gamble.

Against the competition, the ZX-10R SE clearly encroaches on the territory of the Yamaha R1M and the Honda Fireblade SP. The technical approach differs: no Öhlins here, but a Showa system whose response speed is its main selling point. The price, set at 23,399 euros, represents roughly 5,000 euros more than the base ZX-10R. That's the cost of peace of mind for those who want to ride fast on the road without spending their weekend adjusting their suspension. The target audience is clear: experienced riders and technology enthusiasts looking for a versatile hypersport capable of shining on a demanding road trip just as much as during a track day. A Ninja that thinks for you, so you can focus on the thrill.
