Overview

Motorcycle: Jincheng AX 125 (2006)

Jincheng AX 125

In 2006, while Japanese manufacturers were fighting over tenths of a second at the handlebars of their sharpened 125cc sportbikes, the Jincheng AX 125 offered a radically different vision for the category. This Chinese machine wasn't looking for a fight with Aprilia or Cagiva. It targeted a very specific audience: the novice rider or the city dweller seeking simple, economical mobility. With its look vaguely inspired by 90s sportbikes and its 124cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine, it promised above all not to empty your wallet.

Beneath the pseudo-fairing, the engine is a study in simplicity. Air-cooled and fed by a carburetor, it develops a power output of 11 horsepower. It's a far cry from the shrill screams of the two-strokes of the era. This engine block won't send the speedometer spinning, which sensibly tops out around 90 km/h. Its true strength lies elsewhere: in exemplary frugality. With a claimed fuel consumption of 2.1 liters per 100 km, the fuel tank becomes almost an afterthought. It's the very logic of a utility vehicle, transposed onto a motorcycle with a committed look. The five-speed transmission allows you to juggle the revs, but the pleasure will come from the methodical exploitation of its modest resources.

The chassis, with a dry weight of 107 kilograms, promises an easy-to-handle motorcycle. The seat height, likely low, and the weight distribution make it an ideal tool for learning in the city or on secondary roads. One imagines soft suspension to swallow road imperfections and braking sufficient for serene use. The Jincheng AX 125 was not designed for the track, but to offer a first motorcycle experience without mechanical hassle or excessive expense. It's an anti-sportbike wearing sportbike clothes.

This bike is for the rider for whom motorcycling is above all a transport solution. It's perfectly suited for the new license holder, the student, or as a second vehicle for short trips. It doesn't provide the thrill of a high-performance machine, but in return, it offers rustic reliability and negligible running costs. In the landscape of 125s from the 2000s, the Jincheng AX 125 occupies a niche of its own: that of the unpretentious motorcycle, fully embracing its role as a worker of the daily asphalt.
