Overview
What is the price of an Indian Roadmaster Elite? High enough to make you think twice before signing the purchase order. At €38,990, the 2019 Indian Roadmaster Elite plays in the league of the most exclusive American land yachts. And that's precisely where it wants to be. Indian decided to step onto Harley-Davidson's CVO turf with its Elite lineup, and the Roadmaster represents the pinnacle of that ambition. A 430 kg fully loaded flagship, hand-painted over thirty hours, adorned with 24-karat gold leaf on a two-tone Wildfire Red Candy and Thunder Black Crystal finish. This is far from a simple limited-edition sticker job.

Beneath that ceremonial bodywork beats a 49-degree V-twin displacing 1811 cc, fed by two valves per cylinder and a 9.5:1 compression ratio. The claimed 84 horsepower looks modest on paper, but it's the torque that tells the real story. 150 Nm available from just 3,000 rpm, delivered through a six-speed gearbox and a belt drive. This twin isn't trying to impress at high revs — it pushes hard and low, with a smoothness that perfectly suits the mission. Three ride modes (Tour, Standard, Sport) let you adjust the throttle response, and a rear cylinder deactivation system at idle spares the rider from having their thighs roasted in traffic. Top speed caps out at 180 km/h, which says everything about this machine's temperament. We're not talking about a sportbike — we're talking about a rolling living room.
On the chassis side, the cast aluminum frame houses a 46 mm telescopic hydraulic fork with 119 mm of travel up front and a single shock offering 114 mm at the rear. Braking relies on dual 300 mm discs gripped by four-piston calipers in front and a single disc of the same diameter at the rear. Tires in 130/90-16 and 180/60-16 keep things planted on the tarmac, and the seat perched at 673 mm makes the bike approachable despite its imposing size. The 21-liter tank ensures decent range for devouring miles without stopping every hundred kilometers.

The equipment goes a long way toward justifying the price tag. Power windshield, heated seat and grips, cruise control, keyless ignition, a 7-inch Ride Command touchscreen with GPS and Bluetooth. The 600-watt PowerBand audio system, doubled compared to the standard version, integrates a nine-band dynamic equalizer that automatically compensates for ambient noise based on speed. Chrome Pinnacle mirrors, branded rider floorboards, and leather passenger armrests complete the picture. Every detail exudes the care put into the finish, from the ever-present chrome to the decorative bars on the fenders.

Then there's the question of positioning. If you're looking for a used Indian Roadmaster Elite, the 2018, 2020, or 2021 model years offer very similar features for a more modest budget. Against the Harley-Davidson CVO Limited or Road Glide CVO, the Roadmaster Elite puts forward a compelling argument: that artisanal paintwork and refinement in the details that Milwaukee doesn't offer in quite the same way. For the well-heeled touring rider who wants to cross a continent two-up in princely comfort, with a sound system capable of drowning out the V-twin's rumble, this machine checks every box. It's aimed neither at beginners nor track enthusiasts, but at those who consider the road itself as the destination. And at this price, the destination had better be a long one.
